Iowa Cubs vice-president/assistant general manager Randy Wehofer didn’t know what to think when the club’s parking attendants called him before Saturday’s game to tell him that a special guest had randomly showed up and was checking out the team store.

The attendants were convinced that they had seen rock star Eddie Vedder, of all people, unexpectedly roll through the parking lot and into the team store.

"I thought, 'That seems kind of random, but I’ll go check it out to see if they know what they’re talking about,'" Wehofer said. "That's kind of the nature of being in this business — you just never know."

Turned out, they were right. The Pearl Jam star made a quick stop at the Triple-A park Saturday night when his flight out of Des Moines was delayed. Vedder, a die-hard Cubs fan, had driven by the park and decided to use his extra time to stop in. Randomly.

Wehofer said Vedder was at the park for about 15 minutes and used the time to do some shopping before the gates opened. He picked up a couple of Iowa Caucuses hats, the team the Cubs will transform into later this season in a nod to the upcoming political event.

"Eddie said, 'You've got a great park and we want to come back,'" Wehofer said.

"I just told him it’s nice to meet him. I gave him my card and said if you’re coming back to Des Moines and we can help you with anything, let us know."

Vedder slipped in and out of the park without most people even noticing.

“He was nice,” Wehofer said. “He’s obviously a big Cubs fan. And the guy you see on TV hanging around the Cubs celebrations is the guy I met.”

Wonder how many people a minor league ballpark could hold with seats on the field? Minor League ballparks might be better for concerts in some ways than MLB parks, though parking would be horrific and I don’t think they are usually as accessible to major highways or mass transit either.

Fifth Third Ballpark opened with a seating capacity of 5,701 has been expanded in 1996 to seat 10,700, and 1999 to seat 11,000. It currently has a seating capacity of 8,942, including 7,642 fixed chairback seats. The stadium was built entirely with private funds.

Mumford and Sons is playing the minor League park in Missoula tonight. Better size for a show than football stadium or baseball stadium. I’d prefer PJ goes back to the Adams Center in Missoula on the next go round.

If they play there they also need to play the Surf Ballroom (site of Buddy Holly/Ritchie Valens/Big Bopper’s last gig)
