Definately a great song... one of the best. It was amazing to see him sing it on MTV. It made Ten real. Just a beautiful song with amazing lyrics and Eddie's voice at its best. And! makes an awesome concert opener.

To be honest I never really liked Oceans that much. if I'm in the right mood it can be good but....
I'll Ride The Wave Where It Takes Me
  • Love it...especially when they use it to open a set!!!

  • I was going to start a thread and ask what people thought of this one - and decided to search for one first...

I'm listening to Ten at work, and this came on, and it was the first track that I really stopped and listened to... I LOVE the video for this song - the band seems so young and vibrant and "in the moment."

Of all the songs on Ten, I think this is the most arresting, the most touching. It just grabs me every time I hear it, and takes me someplace special... and yet it's such a simple song.

I love it. Thought I'd say so.

  • The song used to put me to asleep as a very young kid ---like 10,11.....But over the years I grew to love it.........Now, to me, its the most nostalgic Pearl Jam song in their whole catalogue........That song just takes me back and reminds of how I percieved and heard PJ waaay back in the day.......Just a great song all around...Definately one of their most unique songs...

  • Oh wow...I just got major goosebumps when I thought of this song. Like a lot of other people, I originally just thought of Oceans as the song that was between Jeremy and Porch. Now it's my favorite on Ten, and I'm over Jeremy. Porch is still sweet, though:)

  • gotta jump in.. although even flow and release used to battle my mind for best TEN song, with garden admittedly right behind.. as soon as i heard the MTVunplugged oceans it was all over.

damn.. with eddie draining out the ending.. fuck.. mmmmmm i love it so..

clearly the hidden diamond amongst a sea of emeralds..

it's almost like they thought with that song they had created some kind of special musical tangent or something.. or at least a keystone for one..

i just love the inference that the.. oh fuck, the currents can shift.. anytime.. oh fuck.. better to wait by the shore.. at least once more..

kinda like fire and rain, but with hope!
    change begins with discontent.
  • actually, "oceans" is one of the few pearl jam songs that I don't like very much. I think its lyrics are pretty good but the way eddie sings in it just annoys me kind of.

I think the reason for there being soo much love in such a simple song is the Ed loves the ocean. He always refers to it being a surfer-dude. The song is almost tribal...especially the last 30 seconds.

Mmmmmmmmm........such a tasty song, always loved it.

Anyone know an easy tab for it....i suck at guiatar but would love to sing it to the mrs. Straight into bed after that number eh? Nudge nudge.
  • First time I heard this, first thing I thought was how different it sounded to pretty much everything else on Ten...
Then I thought 'Fuck yeah, this is class.'
It's so... ethereal. The music itself brings to mind the ocean, the words are perfect, Ed's voice...

I would say it's one of Pearl Jam's most beautiful songs, right up there with Black, Nothingman, Hard To Imagine and Man of the Hour.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Believe it or not, the Hal Leonard Tab Book for Ten has an excellent transcription for this in it. Just don't look at the Tab for Even Flow - it completely blows (is not accurate at all!). But Oceans is good.
