Band/Artist without a good studio album

Bands/Artists sometimes are unreal live but when they get in the studio it doesn’t capture the magic.

3 bands/artists come to mind for me.

Gary Clark Jr.
Phish
The Grateful Dead

Great live bands. Studio albums 🤮
Peace,Love and Pearl Jam.

Ha! Before I even opened the thread I was going to say Gary Clark Jr. Saw him 2 or 3 times before Blak and Blu came out. Man, was that a let down. Felt like a lot of bad production decisions were made. I haven't even bothered listening to his other 2.

Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are classic albums. Its not so much their live sound, but they are fantastic records.

Same with Phish, Billy, Ghost and Farmhouse are peak Phish in the studio, capturing all of their facets, but just not the improvisation. Ghost comes close though.

the problem with those 2 specifics acts are that people usually get turned onto the act because of live shows (cheap and free to trade). Studio and Live are meant to be 2 different beasts.

Tim nailed it pearljammer78.  Those two albums are close to perfect.  And this comes from someone who has never, since day one, been a big Dead fan.  But I would not want those two records missing from my collection- they are superb albums, perfect at the right moment.

I can't think of any bands that I love, like, or at least have an interest in that have done nothing decent in the studio.

Well, there is one band I'm very familiar with who's studio output (to me) went kaput a little over halfway through their career, yet they remain an impressive live presence.  The You-Know-Who.
