  • Commercialism is a great interpretation of the song, but I've always seen it as a way of telling someone to FUCK OFF!!! For me I have a lot of personal interpretations for the song...for me "Not For You" has to do with teen involvement/dedication. With me being a band member, I've seen a lot of ppl join band that do it for the hell of it and then they go talk trash about us, and our school board doesn't give a shit about us but we're one of the best organizations our school has to offer. So I've always seen our band as "Not for any of them..." Also, I think the song can refer to posers, those who spend their lives conforming to society and never trying to be themselves, and they come and go as they please. I have more but those are the 2 big ones for me.
    "Darth Vader would say 'Impressive'."

have you ever heard the live bootleg where ed talks about one interpretation of the song? he says to the audience that it's written for the people who think that they are more important than the music. obviously talking about people at the record label at that time. but i also think it was a message to anybody back in the day who wanted pj to focus on being the world's biggest band ... cranking out hits ... doing tons of inteviews ... etc. (everything that wasn't about writing and playing music).

  • here's what eddie has to say about that:

"There is something sacred about youth, and the song is about how youth is being sold and exploited. I think I felt like I had become part of that too. Maybe that's why sometimes I have a hard time with the TV end of music and much of the media and the magazines. When I pick up a magazine, I just count how many pages of ads before the first article starts. You go one, two... up to fifteen to twenty or more. And then in the back you have phone sex ads. So I've pretty much had it. I don't want to be the traveling medicine show where we go out and do the song and dance and someone else drops the back of the wagon and starts selling crap. I don't want our music to sell anything -- or anyone else use it."

the interpretations i've seen here seem to confirm what eddie said

That interpretation sounds logical. I love the song. It is my fav. off of Vitalogy. I love when Ed says, "Restless soul, enjoy your youth". I think the majority of kids these days want to be older, so they try to act and dress more mature. I am a young adult and still find myself wanting to be just a bit older; however, I am beginning to see that your youth is really the best part of your life. I try to apply that line in my daily life.

Besides this information, I must tell you that in some article I`ve read long time ago, it said that this song was dedicated to some stupid f*ck that wrote a letter to the band telling them that he loved to rape girls listening to Pearl Jam at the same time...I found it quite interesting, but I`ve never dedicate the time to try to find this out in the meaning of the song`s words...so what can you tell me??? what about the lyrics?? As you can see, I`m from Argentina and my english sucks...does it make sense???

    Until next time...

Not For You from my first show, 10/2/96 in Hartford. Still by far the best version I know of, and the speech in the middle will give you EXACTLY what you are looking for.

    Enjoy.

Heh, there aren't too many live songs I can think of where Eddie gives that good of an interpretation.
