Down interpretation anyone?

Down is one of my favorite PJ songs but I still don't get it. I know the line "you can't be neutral on a moving train" is the name of one of Howard Zinn's books, and the song was inspired by him.

But the line "one day the symptoms fade/I think I'll throw these pills away" sounds like it dabbles in Mike McCready's past (with his drug addictions and all.)

That's the only line I understand, does anyone have an interpretation of this song?

Zinn writes that the powerful corporations and the government want the public to believe a reality that is not true. \\I think the song means "the symptoms will fade" (anxiety, depression, mistrust) when I wake up from the corporate...mainstream reality ..."and I'll throw these pills away" ....we are a Prozac nation.

    From dictionary.com:

    Idioms for 'wayside'

fall by the wayside: To fail to continue; give up.

    Didn't know that.
