Otherside

it's not the same without you up here
can't find my wheels
your absence is what breeds this fear
warm breath and all it steals
you can't know how it feels to be in here
all the dark horse fields, befriendin' me
playin' ain't the same without you here
we've come to hate the golden rule
cannot seem to make the dots connect
the morning light don't show you near
you can't know what it's like to bleed from here
the blackened world goes white, it goes nowhere
oooh hoo..
death ain't the same without you, dear
i make the others run and hide
new york streets seem to make it worse
all this noise inside the quiet
i can't hold on, the weight you bear
my body's broken fast, please lift me up
you can't know what it's like to be inside
your fading melodies can't beat my need
i'm not the same without you here
how can i quit to be there
sit and stare
stare..
begging for a prayer

- lyrically, one of the best songs ever, & I just love the sound & emotional singing - best song from the Riot Act sessions, in my opinion
"It doesn't feel like the United States of America these days...it just doesn't" - Eddie, 4-6-03

  • out of all jeffs' riot act songs, this one is the best. it shouldn't have been a b-side. it fits lost dogs even better, though

this song came on the AOL radio station and man...it gets to me every single time! it is so beautiful. i think it's my favorite jeff song, even more than 'lowlight'

"you can't know what it's like to be inside" - the way ed sings that - *dissolving*

and at the end, "i'm not the same without you here" - damn. goes straight to the heart.

much love to this song - thank you mr. ament :)

I beautiful song...I heard he wrote it for his parents. Parents must be proud.
yeah, what a wonderful tribute to them ay? :)

and to compound the beauty, i LOVE what ed said about it in the liner notes for LD:

"if life is a cruise ship and death is to disembark to another shore, then this song is what it's like to be on land while your partner remains out at sea"

    *sniffle* DAMN!

    beautiful tune!!

    i really love those lyrics!
So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone. And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow. But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself. It is best to compose a poem, an honest longing or simple song of hope.
    That is why I'm singing

I've just realised how great Jeff is with lyrics actually:
    Nothingman,
    Low Light,
    Nothing As It Seems,
    Otherside etc...

I've always thought his lyrics were good, but never realised how good they actually were..the lyrics to all of these are very impressive..

hahaha yeah, let's :D everyone has their off day as evidence by that song (at least in my opinion lol)

it's true though, jeff writes some really gorgeous lyrics. very picturesque, painting with his words.

Damn now you got me crying...I promised myself I wouldn't get upset. All kidding aside, I would hate to think that one day I would lose someone that close to me that I openly regret not being alive just to be with them on the otherside. That is the ultimate love that can be shown. But let's face it I bet it is beautiful there, even if it goes way beyond our comprehension. I couldn't begin to try...
yeah that's some intense love...the trick is acheiving that intensity while both are above ground and on the same shore

really such a beautiful song, i hope they play it on the next tour!

it is a very beautiful song, and I adore the hell out of it. Just reminds me of my love right now, who is only a few hours away. A great song about missing your partner in life :) Thanks Jeff for writing such a beautiful song :D

    *sigh*

I am SO in love with this song. :o

I made a thread for it back in 2003
    <http://forums.pearljam.com/showthread.php?t=8745>
...but this song can seriously never get enough praise.

I also had a NON-STOP campaign for this beauty back then too...it carried it's way over to this year and as much as it hurts my PJ lovin heart that it hasn't been unleashed yet... I know that the timing just wasn't right. The hope will never die cuze I know the boys WILL bring it to us when it is. :) Ahhh I just can't wait until that long awaited day finally comes. To experience all this heaven live?!!? :o I'm not too sure how we're gonna survive! Killing us gently...going out in complete and total bliss. :D

I've said before and I'll say it again...Jeff may not write songs all that often but when he does?! Good lord. This and LOW LIGHT are by far 2 of the most gorgeous works of art imo and I'm forever grateful to the mighty man for sharing these gifts with us all.

OTHER/SIDE really is something VERY special. I have yet to meet one person that isn't just completely taken back by it's radiant, infectious beauty. It's seriously one of the most gorgeous songs I've ever heard. Words, music, ED'S VOICE...just everything. It's just so soothing. As Jeff said in the LD booklet~~> a song about "everlasting love"...which is definitely something I possess for this heavenly creation.:o

    THANK YOU JEFF!
and THANK YOU + Pearljamslion + for spreading more love! :)
