What meaning is there behind that song? I don't quite make a connection

Basically that rats are better at taking care of each other than humans.
    Live the life you dream

"Cause I can't wait to figure out what's wrong with me
So I can say this is the way I use to be" -- John Mayer
  • I guess, but that depends on your definition of "better", i always assumed the lyrics had a parrallel to something other than just actually rats

Look at the lyrics though. Its a List of all the Bad things humans do to eachother that rats don't.

    They don’t push, don’t crowd
Congregate until they’re much too loud
Fuck to procreate till they are dead
Drink the blood of their so called best friend

They don’t scurry when something bigger comes their way
Don’t pack themselves together and run as one
Don’t shit where they’re not supposed to
Don’t take what’s not theirs, they don’t compare

    They don’t scam, don’t fight
Don’t oppress an equals given rights
Starve the poor so they can be well fed
Line their holes with the dead ones bread
That's two things we've got, Tape and Time.

Ah one of my favorite songs, I believe in a sense it is comparing human behavior to rats, and in our culture rats are low on the totem pole and aren't thought of highly. I think it's a great song lyrically that is often overlooked and needs to be played live.
  • Love Rats!!!!

You know how people will call someone a rat and mean it in a derogatory sense? Well the song is saying how if you think rats are so bad take a long, hard look at your own species. They don't compare.
If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

I think it's kinda vague what lines are about rats and what are about humans. I think it's meant that way. We humans feel all good, but if you look at what we do, you can't tell the difference between a human and a rat.
