I just discovered this song and it kicks ass. Any thoughts on the meaning or personal interpretations?

  • I like the line "we're friends only because of our situation..." I've had that.

as for meaning, its (basically) about people who attach themselves to others and leech off of them. After that, its what you think

  • Yeah I think it's definately about being used emotionally, carrying someones emotional baggage if you like. I like the 'leech' idea - that sums it up rather well I think.

I've loved this track since I heard it a while back and since I got 'lost dogs' and put it on my iPod its all I listen to. I keep thinking 'listen to something else - another album maybe' but I always end up listen to 'hitchhiker' because it's just fabulous. I love the way it starts........"YOU FOOL!" then the riff kicks in. It's awesome.

    "hitchhiiiiiikerrrrr!"
  • this is a happy feel good song :)

Wow, didn't see that one coming. You really think so? I the lost dog booklet it says it's about autograph hunters. To me it's about friendship, but not really happy.
  • Yeah I believe that the word 'hitch-hiker' is used on the music circuit for people who get your autograph to sell on e-bay and the rest.....but also Ed says that he was on holiday with Matt and looking at those sticky things on plants that are called 'hitch-hikers'. So that's where the name of the song came from....who knows what it's REALLY about?

Same here, I know this thread is kinda old but I just noticed this line the other day in the song and it really hits close to home for me.

I'd like to dedicate this song to a few of my family members.. :D:D:D
This song is so fucking stank and snotty.. I GET it...now... :p

" You fool, dude what do what you think you're doing?
So you're lost, my problem, that's not
Conductor says, 'off of my train'
We understood, guest/host relationships ain't my thing
Even if I could, you ain't the kind of person I would help anyway
    I'm about to explode
Cuz I can't carry your load
    Hitchhiker... go, hitchhiker

You're cool, and cold in your calculations
We're friends, only because of my situation
    I'm about to unload
Cuz I can't carry your load
    Hitchhiker... go, hitchhiker

    Hitchhiker...
So be gone, too soon is too late
    I don't want no delay

So be gone, get your food off someone else's plate
    Go tell all your friends
I'm an idiot and you're great
    Hitchhiker... hitchhiker...
    Now go, hitchhiker... go, hitchhiker"

  • I can relate to that feeling as well, Kaddikat. I was actually listening to disc 1 of Lost Dogs earlier, and I have the same sort of feeling about Education ("I'm questioning my education / Is my education who I am now?")
  • One of my favourite Pearl Jam songs for the lyrics. I think it's a masterpiece.

    "Guest/host relationships ain't my thing"

    Cool song.

I love it. :D It's for sure relatable and taps on some serious shit but it's also got such a fun vibe and always makes me laugh! I mean those first lines?! HA! And they come in with ZERO hesitiation. Cracks me up the hell up. :p Ooooh and the tweaked out jam!? AWESOME AS FUCK!

  • I LOVE this song -- great to run to on the treadmill...

Hangers on leeching off successful people...I had a crapload of friends when I worked in radio and could get tix to movies and concerts...but where are those "friends" now? Even other radio people refused to continue a friendship once I was out of the scene...one even told me that since I didn't work in the biz, they had nothing to gain from our association!! Those Fools!

however, it does sound like "Rock Lobster"...

  • I think it's about persons who would like to use you. They want you to solve their problems. Everybody knows that kind of relationship when someone you even don't know is talking about his problems and hoping that you can help him. he put all his hope in you and isn't realising that you're not the right person. Maybe Ed is singing about all the persons who wrote him and talking about their personal problems and hoping that he can help to solve. They forget that he's only a man, he's not a messiah.
Beavis : Is this Pearl Jam?
Butt-head: This guy makes faces like Eddie Vedder.
Beavis: No, Eddie Vedder makes faces like this guy.
Butt-head: I heard these guys, like, came first and Pearl Jam ripped them off.
Beavis: No, Pearl Jam came first.
    Butt-head: Well, they both suck.

I totally agree on the "leech" theory. They're people who just hang around you for ages, taking the ride on your hard work, status or connections you may have; forcing you to take their pain and solve their problems. Later, they will also try to blame you for everything bad that can possibly happen to them.
There is another version of this sort of people; the ones who try to make your life and your problems theirs, to (that always seemed too twisted to me; kind of reminds me of "All about Eve" or "Single White Female", in a modern version), trying to make themselves essential in your life and ending up stealing your life from you.
  • I'll jump in on this one. I absolutely love this song. Lost Dogs 1 is seriously one of my favorite albums. Hitch-Hiker, Education, In The Moonlight, U are all amazing. Every time I go to play something on the pod, I play these tracks first.

The way Education comes in is probably my favorite PJ drum intro, they are so thick and bassy, and then, "YEEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Are you too good to tango with the poor poor boys?

Sometimes Eddie's lyrics are just so gosh darn sharp. Sometimes they are gobblyguck, but often they are very clear. What great lyrics!

I thought it was "we're friends only because of MY situation"
I once read that ed had the inspiration for this song as he was wandering with a friend or a member of his family and they were walking trough fields and noticed that there were a lot of these little green seeds ( like little balls) on their clothes. These seeds need to hitchhike so that the plant can grow on different places.

can;t believe its never been performed live...would be so amazing (even though ive never seen them live dagnabbit!)...is an amazing song though, and one that even after the first listen gets lodged in your head...there arent that many songs that do that, but this one was one of those songs...
