Bugs

Do you think Ed is literally talking about Bugs? That's always been my initial thought, but then there is definitely a possibility that it means something else...deeper.

All thoughts are welcome.

PS - I admit, i don't mind this song a bit!

Nah, it's definitely deeper than being about Bugs. Of course, it could mean nothing at all...
Too many cowboys, not enough indians, so just go ape shit!

I may be boring but at least I'm not Jack fucking Johnson.

TV is such shit; let's go outside and ride bicycles, right now!

I think it's probably a metaphore. For a certain kind of people maybe?
  • I think it's about the media and selling out..

"Bugs on my window trying to get in.
They don't go nowhere. Waiting, waiting...
Bugs on my ceiling. Crowded the floor.
Standing, sitting, kneeling. A few block the door.
    And now the questions..."

"..Do I join them? Looks like that's the one.
I got bugs on my skin. Tickle my nausea.
I let it happen again. They're always taking over.
I see they surround me I see, see them deciding my fate.
Oh, that which was once, was once up to me. Now it's too late."
"I'm like an opening band for the sun"
  • Most people think it refers to bugs, as in- the electronic listening devices, bugs..using them as a metaphor, for the lack of privacy he was enduring due to the bands fame.

I think you're right. But to that other guy, IDK if Eddie did heroin or not.

    i love bugs! so much!

    makes me dance.
  • I think all the ideas have been really good...electronic bugs, real bugs, the media...they all make sense. the beauty about Ed's writing is that he probably intended for us to believe all of those when he wrote it. It was probably about all three ideas...maybe even more.

As amusing as some of the "song" like Bugs are, I wish they used the space to include other more legit songs.

Well, I think he's talking about people who are pesty like bugs.
But the beauty of the song is that he COULD be talking only about bugs. :D

I understand where you're coming from, but I think Vitalogy was a different ball game for Pearl Jam. Ed's state of mind and the state of the band was pretty fucked up and pissed off. I think with songs like Pry, To, Bugs, Aye Davinita, and Stupid Mop...they were challenging listeners and their fans to consider this as a collective thought. They were saying "I challenge you to hear an accordian while I sing about bugs. I challenge you to hear me sing one line over and over again. I challenge you to hear us chanting. I challenge you to listen to this fucked up ending."

Obviously, not a direct quote, but I think that's what they were trying to do. Overall, they were saying "we're fucked up right now, and so is this album. If you wanna know where our heads are at, here ya go." You gotta think, even the art work is all black and dark - and the booklet (based off the real book) is full of fucked up passages and images.

I think it's about as close as PJ has come to a "concept album".

It may not be their best LP but it's by far the coolest!

i think eddie is talkin about people... around this point in his life he seems to be real cynicle and his view on humanity was a little less that grand, so it seems like it could be about all the 'bad' people out there... "should i eat them? raw or well done? should trick them? i dont think they're that dumb, should i join them? looks like thats the one"
    peace

EV is such a poet and i love the concept, however i wish it was more of a "song" - more melodic and perfected (i understand, though). i just hate when they waste tracks on an album with this shit, like they did a few times on vitalogy. these are not things i can listen to regularly.

i think it's time for ''bugs'' to be part of a show..

i wish it will be in katowice(i'll be there)

and who knows..maybe ed will tell us all about it..

    my opinion..bugs=people,media maybe

i'd love to hear this one live too.

and i think the bugs are many things (media, music industry, etc)... one of them being us, the psychoticallty adoring fans. one of the themes of vitalogy is the realtionship between the fan and the musician (in a syd barret/pink floydian sense)... and remember, cobain had passed only a few months before the album was in the studio and one of the things that did him in was the pressures of that relationship.
