When I was a fledgling music journalist some 30 years ago, my first assignment was to review a Barry Manilow concert....my review caught the ire of the Manilow devoted, and they were very vocal in their letters to the editor!

Not kidding. I’ve seen Manilow 3x. Once from the front row. Actually not awful.

Edit: I should say I bought the tickets as a gift for someone else each time ;)

Good for you Joe, tell it like it is!  But, haha, admit it, you ran our and got that cute Barry haircut, right?

    LOL.

Gotta give the man credit though, like 'em or not, the guy did write a bunch of popular songs.

This is interesting to me because , though I'm not a Manilow fan, he has made a lot of people happy and I can't find fault in that.  He's sort of in that field with guys like Neil Diamond but I think the difference (to me anyway) is that Diamond occasionally stepped out of that glaring spotlight and has written some songs that are embedded in the soul as opposed to lighting up the billboards.  His 12 Songs album has a lot of that kind of stuff (at least partly if not in a big way by working with Rick Ruben).  I don't know that Manilow ever got to that place which is a bit unfortunate.

To me, he's the David Copperfield of the music realm - maybe it's the outfits and flair...and a healthy dose of vanilla.

Although, as a young teen, I was a fan of Could it be Magic and the song from Foul Play.  You can keep that Copa Cabana crap.

    From the ubiquitous Urban Dic:

    Manilow
Someone who is boring, or a let down. Derived from the word Barry (Barry Manilow).

    "Don't be a Barry" or "Don't be a Manilow."
Ben:  I can't be bothered to go out tonight.
Matt: Ah, don't be a Manilow!

(I'd rather be a "true" Barry, anyway)

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star
    Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor, they worked from eight til four
They were young and they had each other
    Who could ask for more?

At the copa (co) Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
    At the copa (co) Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the copa they fell in love
    Copa, Copacabana

    His name was Rico
    He wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit to far
    Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
    But just who shot who?

At the copa (co) Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
    At the copa (co) Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the copa, she lost her love
    (Copa, Copacabana)
    (Copa, Copacabana)
    (Copacabana)
    like in Havana
    (Copa, banana)
Music and passion were always in fashion

Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was thirty years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in dress she used to wear
    Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
    Now she's lost her mind

At the copa (co) Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
    At the copa (co) Copacabana
Music and passion were always in fashion
At the copa don't fall in love
    don't fall in love
    (Copacabana)
    (Copacabana)
    Masterpiece.

That third verse is a real downer.  Thanks a lot, Barry.

Still, I can't smile without him.  In fact, I'm finding it hard to do anything, dammit.
