The lyrics were taken from a note that Dennis Flemion from The Frogs left for Ed. Ed talked about it before the band played the song at the 6/30/06 show in Milwaukee. This is from the Two Feet Thick concert summary -

Ed tells of the story of "Smile" and the local origins of its lyrics: "There's a band that hails from Milwaukee - they're an important band to myself other guys in this group, guys in Queens of the Stone Age, Kurt (Cobain), Nirvana - everybody was really touched and moved by this little band. They were called The Frogs. I've got all their records, all 692 I believe. And they opened for us years ago and one night, after we had finished our little tour, I opened my notebook and there was a little note from one of the Frogs and it was beautifully written and the band was playing a song in the room that day in practice and I just started singing the note. These words are written by Denis from the Frogs - he's here tonight. Denis, this is for you, this song's called 'Smile'". During the song, Ed sings "Denis, this is how I feel."

Like Wishlist, this song is so basic in terms of lyrics, but it works so well.

It's been in my top 5 PJ songs for a while now too.

I love so many things about this song but I guess there's three things about it I love most:

The harmonica ~ how cool is that harmonica intro and the little bits scattered throughout the song? :)

    The lyrics ~

I miss you already, I miss you always.

I just love this line, and use it to sign off on letters, emails and pm's all the time.
And I particularly love listening to Ed singing it. :)

3 crooked hearts swirls all around

This is just such a beautiful visual lyric. I even got so excited about a gift that was wrapped in paper with crooked hearts and swirls that I kept the paper and can't remember what I did with the gift! :o

    I love this song. :)

Just popped it into the cd player now and cranked it to 11 so the neighbours can share! ;)

And yes, the harmonica is just beautiful in this song. But then this is just a beautiful song!! I love the drums, the bass, the lyric, the vocal, the guitar, I just love this song. :) So glad they collaborated with Neil, coz I'm thinking this is very much his kinda song. :)

That's what I did and I was up to Mankind but I've just taken it back to Smile and cranked it even more so that everyone around me can share it too! :D

I think No Code came after Merkinball/Mirrorball didn't it? Or around that time?
You can hear the influence and it's really something to hear! :)

There ya go Oregon and Melbourne on the same tune at the same time! :D

You know I don't think I have a live version of it on closer inspection of my cd collection. :o

But it's ok, Ed's on Present Tense so that's pretty and might actually turn up the corners of my mouth today.
