I saw a headline and byline on WaPo but I hit the paywall. Any Toronto area or Canadians that can fill me in on the pushback or what went wrong? Seems interesting with robot trash collection, snow plowing and other stuff. AI going to far?

As an aside, it sounds like most initiatives (not even needing to zoom in as far as AI) - a lack of planning is leading to its demise. No business model fully defined, a public that is irate because they were promised progress on deadlines not yet met (six months behind and counting), Google now hinting at monetizing attempts that go against the ethos of the project, and universal concern over what Google will do with the data they collect and assuring privacy is left intact (to which I say good fucking luck - if you aren't paying for a product or service someone is offering you - then you are most likely the product).
As a second aside - AI is nothing more than identifying and learning from patterns in data faster than we can as individuals. That can be used as nobly or nefariously as a user wishes. We are looking at leveraging AI to notify our team members when an order is at risk of not being shipped out on time to provide a chance to address issues, expedite and keep customers happy. Of course, when we're ready to implement, we can also use AI to strategically understand how many hours/days/weeks after a sale a client would be most receptive to promotions from us, and time our outreaches accordingly (as is pretty commonplace amongst larger retailers at this point). Not saying this is a dirty practice, but if a business isn't implementing AI with the explicit purpose of articulating additional value to a client through AI, then the risk is that a business creates an exclusively self-serving implementation which might present profitably in the short term, but probably not in the long-term. Fundamentally, I think if you're running a business for the right reasons - to address a client need as best as you possibly can - AI doesn't have to be a dirty acronym - but there's always a choice.
