Create a Traveling Wilburys type band.

The Traveling Wilburys emerged from a happy coincidence when George Harrison was asked to come up with a b-side for a single from Cloud Nine.  Harrison commandeered Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison (who happened to be hanging out in Dylan's studio at the time) to help him with a new song of his, "Handle With Care".  The result was so good, the five of them decided to go ahead and make an entire album under the name "Traveling Wilburys".  The result was the excellent album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1.

So here is the hypothetical situation:  You are a top notch record producer with a crack team of studio musicians who play bass, drums and other supporting instruments for well seasoned singer/guitarist/songwriters.  One day, you notice that five well known such musicians (living today in 2019) are in the studio at the same time.  You get them together to record a track and the vibe is so good, they form a side band similar to the way The Traveling Wilburys did and they cut a really fine album.

Who are those five living artist? You create the band!

    Vaden Todd Lewis - vox
    J Mascis - lead guitar
    Stone Gossard - rhythm guitar
    Danny Carey - drums

I would play bass myself. However, if something came up and I was unavailable, Roger Waters would be a suitable replacement.

John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees - Vox, guitar, synth
Aaron Bruno of Awolnation - Vox, guitar
The Weeknd - Vox, dance moves
Justin Timberlake - Vox, guitar, piano
    Courtney Barnett - Vox, guitar

I decided to use people in bands from the last 10 years or so to make it interesting.  It was tough choosing Courtney over Taylor Swift as I think she would have been a good fit in here too.
  • Daniel Greaves of the Watchmen - vocals
Tim White of the Headstones - bass
Mike McCready of Pearl Jam - lead guitar
Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters - drums
Alain Johannes - guitar and everything else

Can we talk about the Wilburys too?  Does Tweeter and the Monkey Man make fun of Bruce or honor him? Or both?
  • you want to hear tweeter and the monkeyman the way it was meant to be?

An odd assortment and a bit of a stretch but it would be interesting:

    Guitars and vocals:

    Neil Young:  Guitar and vocals
    Eddie Vedder:  Guitar and vocals
    Willie Nelson:  Trigger and vocals
Bonnie Raitt:  Slide guitar and vocals
J Mascis:  Sorry J, just the Fender Twin and Gibson Hummingbird with pick up and vocals- no triple Marshall stacks here!

Chris Squire is dead, man. Geddy had to play his parts during the R&RHOF induction ceremony. He was certainly one of the best, though. “Heart of the Sunrise” is just sick!

That's what makes it difficult.  Really cuts down the choices!

Interesting!  A nice spin on the concept.

OK, in my fictitious world, J opted out to work on a new DInosaur Jr album and was replace by Kris Kristofferson so the line-up now is:

    Neil Young:  Guitar and vocals
    Eddie Vedder:  Guitar and vocals
    Willie Nelson:  Trigger and vocals
Bonnie Raitt:  Slide guitar and vocals
    Kris Kristofferson:  Guitar and vocals

This is tough. I could easily create my basic rock and roll supergroup, but it's tough as hell to create a rootsier strumming and singing supergroup à la the Traveling Wilburys. I don't like many of the contemporary male artists that fit into this category (e.g., Bon Iver, Josh Ritter, Brendan Benson, etc.). Too goddamn whiny for my taste!

I can say that Neko Case, Neil Young and Emmylou Harris would be in the band. Maybe that's it. Just a trio. (Emmylou has experience with trios and Neil, and I think she has a gig at the Gorge with Neko this summer!) Anyway, I would love to hear them harmonize.

    Band name: Eminence.

Well I hope it's not RITFW, because of the 93 NY songs PJ could play, they play the worst possible choice.

Cool story though, I'll have to check them out. Obviously you are quite the fan.

I just mean it's the one cover they play every show. the only difference is they kind of have to as the fans expect it. they haven't grown tired of it like some PJ fans with RITFW. And they also fill it with tags and covers and stuff to keep it fresh. And it's not always the encore.

that I am, good sir, that I am.

    Natalie Maines - vocals, guitar
    Juliana Hatfield - vocals, bass
