    This song is certainly about loving your own life and choosing your own path. But this line specifically, to me, is about thinking of others. Caring for others. Believing in what’s important to others, especially those you love. If that is the life that you build for yourself... if the world you see around you is full of love and peace...

    you’ll be no one’s rival.

    I go to the lyrics before these to get my meaning...

    ”dream the dreams of other men, you’ll be no ones rival”

    I take it as follow your own dreams. Set goals that have never been achieved, reach for the sky, and you may inspire others. Simply following in others footsteps, and taking the road that’s already been traveled, no one will aspire to do be greater than you.

    I think we're on the right track here.  I also saw this as a "go against the flow" in life mentality.  Do what others do -- and no one will go against you.  Choose your own way and you may find resistance.

    Follow your own dreams and strive for your own goals, not what others are striving for, or that were set by anyone other than yourself.  A rival is someone who is competing with you to reach the same goal or objective.  If you are dreaming the dreams of others, and not your own, no one is competing with you, because the correct action is to have your own dreams.

     It’s about a conversation with Catherine Keener, and a book—I think it might have even been called Unthought Known. I got back late to my hotel in New York, and I pushed it that extra hour. I pushed the limits of how much you can drink and smoke, and this song came out of it. I think the thought of the song is that there are things that you know, and they’re in us, but we just haven’t thought of them. But they’re there, and we base decisions on them.

    I heard back in 2010 that one song on backspacer was about Obama. I always thought this is Vedder’s projection onto BO.

    You are correct, it is absolutely straightforward.  Acceptance, understanding, interest, compassion for all.  That's my take.

    First line is about following your own path and beliefs even if you face resistance and disagreement.
    Second line to me is about reason and understanding when facing people with different views or outlooks.

    Don’t be a totally selfish asshole, but also stand up for your beliefs

    I always took this way more positively.   That you can have dreams come true that maybe only you thought were for others and that no one will rival you in terms of the good things you can dream.   I see it as getting lost in your thoughts and dreams and once there, no one can rival what you can dream and that escaping to dreams is a way to not have anyone rival the greatness in those dreams/imagination/mind
