A little Blue Oyster Cult influence, you think? I like "like Romeo and Juliet . . ." song of Blue Oyster Cult, so I like this song so far. :)

I think it kind of sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song.

This is a fantastic song.Great guitar all throughout.
Instead of saying "they can't say I never tried",
    Ed sings something else.
    Anyone know?
"they don't give a shit Keith Moon is dead,
is that exactly what I thought I read?"

I'm really fond of this song. Unemployable has great lyrics, the tune is catchy. It's very good.

And the begining of this one reminds me of The Who. It has the same vibe and the sound of the guitars are very similar...

I think this is the best song on the new album--it's a jam. It was from the minute I heard the album. It stuck out. The bass and guitars just groove with Ed's voice during the chorus, the "I've seen the light...oh oh oohhhh ohhhh" part. It has a great melody but the lyrics are really kind of sad. It's bittersweet.

It kind of has the same sound as "Life Wasted" and "Army Reserve" as if these were written during the same session. I kind of wish the whole album was like these songs. The harder songs just don't do it for me, but I've only listened to them a handful of times so maybe they'll grow on me.

QFT. The lyrics are not many, but they are important. I love the guitars here, and this is my favorite song on the new disc. Just awesome.

This song made me realize that my job is fucking meaningless. I go to work not because it will benefit me or because I have any real reward at the end of the day... I go to work to pay the bills, to support my fiance, to pay my mortgage, to pay taxes, so I can live in this crazy fucking place that people think is the best country in the world.

This song made me realize I am a small cog in a huge system of gears. I am not doing anything really ingenuitive or creative, I am just doing what I have to to help the system keep running. And I don't really have any choice in the matter. Its not like I can quit... I've got the curse of bills unpaid. There is no way out... unless I get fired. Maybe that would be the best thing that could happen.

    Here to die.
    Scared alive.

    Fucking beautiful song.

Matt Cameron strikes again with some clever guitar parts and catchy as hell melodies. It sounds great on the live boots.

I'm feeling the Boss' presence on this track, specifically the verses from "Born in the USA":

"Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up..."

I immediately thought Ed was spittin' it Bruce-style when I first heard "Unemployable." I absolutely love this song because (to me) it sounds like homage to the Boss, both lyrically & musically. Even the topic of a hopeless man sacrificing his life in the rat race harkens the days of "Darkness on the Edge of Town." My favorite line's gotta be "Gets up, lights a cigarette he's grown to hate..."

Anyone else feeling the Bruce/"Born in the USA" connection or am I reaching here...?

this song blew the socks off of me when i first heard it. My jaw literally dropped to the floor and i think i just lay on my bedroom floor twitching and frothing at the mouth for about a half hour after it ended.

Ed's vocals on this track are unbelievable, and the lyrics are so sucinct. I definitely feel the Boss similarities in the message of the song. But the music is uniquely Pearl Jam
  • My favorite song off the new album, i like the fact it sounds like such a happy bouncy song but it actually has sad lyrics.
favourite line is "thinking if he can't sleep how will he ever dream?", i think it means dream of better things and of not having bills on your mind etc

a really catchy song that i listen to at least once every day :-)

Just listening to the DC boot and heard Eddie say that he forgot to put Unemployable on the setlist, then they played it. Nice save Ed, I really love this song!

Yeah, you're reaching....but in the right direction.

To me musically and lyrically Unemployable has that storytelling vibe. Each verse line is the continuing sentence to the next line. The entire first verse could be a conversation....it's a great run-on sentence.

Unemployable is a human, blue collar story set to music Bruce-style, as you say.
