All or none

It's a hopeless... situation
And I'm starting to believe
That this hopeless... situation
Is what I'm trying to achieve

But I try
To run on
Towards
All or none,... all or none

Here's the selfless confession
Leading me back to war
Can we help that,.. our destinations
Are the ones we've been before

I still try
To run on
Towards all
Or none,... all or none

To myself I... surrender
To the one I'll never please

But I still try,.. to run on
I still try,.. to run on
But it's
All or none,... all or none.

Ok, Fins, or anyone, what do you think?

I think this is one of the best songs in PJ's catalogue. Fucking breath taking.
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.

After reading the lyrics I just got an image of someone walking along a dirt road slowly dying of thirst. If someone were to slowly die of thirst would that someone be thinking of war?

  • Love this song.
I don't know why, but it reminds me of "Platoon". I guess it might be because of this part:

    "Here's the selfless confession

Uhhhm, If I were to be dieing slowly of thirst, I'd be thinking about water, I guess ...

On the other hand, I get an image of someone, standing alone on a porch or a balcony, half-hidden behind white drapes, a little drunk, staring at the ocean/horizon ... appears to be sunk in thought, devoured by self-reflection, taken by his mind.
What he is thinking about, no-one knows, no-one needs to know ... maybe he were better off if someone did, but then he'd have to let go of this moment.

This is definatly playing on the background. Seaguls start a cloudy night, as he still stands there and finally ... he sheds a tears

he figured that it's all or none
Surf little waves big... Charge big waves hard

Could be a dirt road in Darfur, Bagdad, Gaza...

Platoon apart… worse wars are always fought against ourselves, isn't it what Buddhists say? Loosing it is the only thing that makes you feel a little alive, even when you’re tired of standing on the edge.
    A star with the blues.
  • I'd love to hear this song reworked, with a real upright, acoustic double bass for Jeff, and lots and lots of Stoney acoustic fingerpicking on the bass notes, for extra brooding. A Mike solo on the bass notes, with a lot of tremolando picking, would be gorgeous. If everything was kept really on the low notes, and stayed there, even if the dynamics changed and the song got louder, I think you'd have an amazing pressure cooker there. A blasting high wailing solo shouldn't come at the end, though. You could really bring out the point of the song, by depriving listeners of that hope in the cathartic classic-Mikey stuff. Stay on the low notes, Mike! And play fast, working down the lowest notes. Really low note bends would do it. Soft and low, building up to louder and lower!

    Just a thought! :)

What's interesting is the music kindof mirrors what I think is the sentiment - depressed, reaching the edge. If it was reworked to include more feel of anxiety then the song may have a different meaning. Instead of being on the edge, the protagonist is almost on the edge.

These bits are me on a daily bases. I never even realised that untill I read this post. Wow, I need to go listen to that song now.
  • It's the "blues", Pearl Jam style! I love that song...the way he sings the lyrics is perfect.
    "The answers are fatal..."

    "My lips are shakin'....

"And Love,...Wish the world would go again with Love
One can't seem to have enough."

It's nice to see it again in the setlist
only love can break your heart
but only love can brake your fall
  • Mikey's solo in Boston 03...is one of my favorite Mikey moments!!
If I could be anything in the world I would be your teardrop...I would be born in your eyes, live on your cheeks, and die on your lips.
  • One of the best songs ever, no doubt about it...I actually heard it yesterday in Zagreb...it was freakin' surreal...the crowd was hypnotised. You could hear a collective gasp when they started playing the song. They did Thin Air, Thumbing my way and All or none back to back, followed by Black...damn....it can't get better than that...All or none was a perfect song for a perfect night. The performance, energy, crowd, atmosphere - simply amazing!
