Education

Here are the lyrics:

i'm questioning my education
is my education who i am now?
while you're deciding, i've been finding
looking around in the here and now
if i've been taught from the beginning
would my fears now by winning?
i'm questioning my own equation
is my own equation relevant somehow?
the flags are waving, the news is breaking
see the man who can't pick out his own tie
if i've been taught from the beginning
would my fears now be winning?
a wild world, figuring out the answers
i'll be in my own dance and iiii...
i'm questioning my education
rewind and what does it show?
could be, the truth it becomes you
i'm a seed, wondering why it grows
...

I wrote poems while listening to this song because it is so damn sexy. However, I didn't know the lyrics. What do you think of this song now that you see the lyrics?

  • well, the lyrics were always important to me... heard it right after I got to college the first year... stuck in my head for months....then Lost Dogs came out and I heard the "new" version....pretty much the same

This is another one that I’ll look at in lines of two:

    i'm questioning my education
is my education who i am now?
(I think there is a time in life where we have to take responsibility for all of our actions. The moment before we still see our parents/teachers/neighbors/community reflected in a few if many of our decisions. The main character has not reached the point where he accepts responsibility for his life forward, but he’s reaching it.)

while you're deciding, i've been finding
looking around in the here and now
(Cocky boy, eh? Thinks well of himself and has not reached a point where other people have ideas to share.)

if i've been taught from the beginning
would my fears now by winning?
(Introspective. My previous responses may have been a little harsh, but it seems at this point, that the main character would like the inner resources to combat his fears, and wonders how he got those fears. This is where the main character becomes multi-dimensional.)

    i'm questioning my own equation
is my own equation relevant somehow?
(Now he even thinks beyond himself, and has to decide how he would like to be defined within the context of his surroundings. How does he have to change to become the person he wants to see in the mirror?)

the flags are waving, the news is breaking
see the man who can't pick out his own tie
(He knows who he doesn’t want to be, one of the masses who is willing to conform even though evidence against that mindset is right in front of his nose. Now, he does not think in the here and now, as someone who is led would think in the here and now.)

if i've been taught from the beginning
would my fears now be winning?
    (Look above.)

a wild world, figuring out the answers
i'll be in my own dance and iiii...
(He decides that he creates his life, and what is unknown to him he will confront until it’s known.)

    i'm questioning my education
rewind and what does it show?
(At this point, considering what has been written, it’s more like look how he has defined his life, and what he knows or doesn’t know he takes total responsibility for.)

could be, the truth it becomes you
i'm a seed, wondering why it grows
(He wonders if people could see who he feels he has become when they look at him. The seed part I’m a little lost, because at this time the main character has gone through quite a bit of introspection, but maybe he decides that due to this introspection he has to constantly reinvent himself?)

Thanks for the indulgence! That was fun.

  • It's an interesting song. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, does the narrator feel he doesn't have enough education, or, too much?

If it's too much, is he questioning why he, or the 'masses', feel the only way to get ahead in life or fit in is to be ultra-educated?

Or is he questioning his own self worth because he's lacking in education? And how he feels without it.

    hmmm...

I think by the end of the song he's become a bit more comfortable with who he is.

I think he's questioning his public education, what they teach us in school is glossed over, flattering and misleading.

I don't know if this is just about a reaction against formal education in school. I think the main character also reacts against the whole "sit up straight, don't talk with your mouth full" mentality.

It may be in a way, he is comparing what's learned in school and what living life just teaches you.
