Another bit of advice - consider buying used, you can get a much nicer instrument for the money. I would suggest hitting your local music stores and seeing what they have to offer. Even better if you have a local luthier, many times people consign their stuff through them.

This! And PLEASE have the guitar properly setup. Too many people lose their interest because the strings are too high off the fretboard and it is difficult to play. I personally like low action. Start with 9 gauge strings, and go from there.

I started with a $300 Fender acoustic. Learned some stuff and had fun playing some songs. But, after awhile, I lost the drive I guess. I plateaued I guess. Hit road blocks and had troubles forcing myself through them. From there, I didn't play much over a couple years. Enought to remember how to play the chords I knew.
Then in February, I decided to get a little crazy. Bought a solid wood Martin dreadnought. Still, on the lower end of their spectrum. Dropped $800 on it. I keep it humidified as well. First time playing that mofo, I was on cloud nine. For me, it was the lower action that made so much more achievable. Mix in a heavy dose of some Ryan Lendt (that dude is a straight up badass!) tutorials and I am having fun all over again. And learning new stuff too!
Quite honestly, I really never thought I'd learn Comfortably Numb or Off He Goes.

As mentioned above, in this case, less action is more...at least for beginners.
