FBI: Wealthy Parents Bribing Colleges To Accept Their Kids

I mentioned this issue in another thread somewhat recently during a convo about tuition costs/access to education/students buying degrees/cheating in post-secondary education. From what I've heard through the university grape vine over the years, this practice is actually RAMPANT in private universities in the USA (particularly in Ivy League schools), and goes way beyond this FBI accusation, on one level or another. The rich buying degrees and/or school work and getting richer as the poor get poorer. When will Americans demand justice and fairness in their higher education system? As someone who works in higher education, I'd really like to see Americans take notice and then take action, and demand better for their youth. It impacts every university and college in the world, really. FWIW, I have PERSONALLY caught a coach at a very famous American institution helping a student cheat on his exams. It was incredibly awkward, and ultimately nothing happened to him just because of politics.

    I know someone who did that for his kid for both prep school and college. Got him on the lacross team in college too with a donation to the athletic department. Kid flunked out and is enrolled PT in community college. Nothing A List about either the prep school or college, probably second or third tier schools.

    Not surprised at all. 

    And to make matters worse, the costs even for an average college, not just a prestigious university, just keep going up.  The cost of tuition today for attending the first semester with a full 15 units at the college I started out at in 1969 would be, adjusting for inflation, about $350.  It's not, it's now $7254.

    So I wonder how Fox Current Events-Related Entertainment is covering this.  My guess is focusing on Felicity Huffman, who is a liberal (and, to a lesser extent, Lori Loughlin, who's politics I am not aware of) and yelling about the Hollywood elite.  The fact that most of the bribers are CEOs and the non-elite kind of rich people will not be acknowledged.  Just my guess.  I don't intend to tune in and find out.

    I heard the beginning of the flush limbo show yesterday  and he was literally screaming  that is was "leftist liberal hollywood" people who had done this.

    FWIW, the university I work for actually banned all coaches from proctoring exams and from arranging proctoring services for our students years ago. The ban was put in place when it became clear that many of them were not following instructions properly in order to help the students, and like I said, they have been caught straight up helping students cheat too. It is common knowledge that coaches can't be trusted with these things.

    I don't even know where to begin, this is such a disgrace.  I know many, many young adults who will spend years, decades even, paying off student loans for an education that has not garnered a decent job.  It breaks my heart to think of the young people who have missed out on scholarships, those who worked their entire lives, got good grades, studied hard and were passed up by wealthy people paying for their kids to get into a good school.  It says a lot about the parents too, it's all about image.  I knew nothing about Lori Laughlin's kids prior to this but now that this has come out, she's not only disgraced the education system, she's made a fool of her daughters.  Half a million dollars.  My kids are so pathetic, I had to pay $500,000 just to get them into this school.  I'd really like to see their high school report cards.  Fucking sad.
