it has lots of different meanings i reckon its kinda crypic/abstract. i love it :D

i know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
    i HOPE you'll be a star,
in somebody elses sky, but why, why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine?!
  • Although it is true that often times, Eddie ( ie not y), makes up certain lyrics to Yellow Ledbetter, the original version did have meaning and wasn't a bunch of nonsense...

I take it as sort of an anti war type song, or not even antiwar but rather a song talking about the after affects of a war in a negative light

    thumbing through the lyrics -
Unsealed on a porch a letter sat - which is like a letter sent to a family saying that there son has died at war

I don't want to be a boxer or a bag - I think this can have a double meaning, but I think of it as in war, you either hit or get hit, as in kill or get killed, but I guess you can also think of it as coming home in a box or in a bag, because if you get killed your either in a box or in a bag...

and I think the whole sand aspect of the song is about the beachfront of a war.

Anywho, I'm pretty sure eddie said something about this song being about war or something to that extent...

on a side note, I'm pretty sure that Yellow Ledbetter is the name of a beach
  • this theme comes agian and again and again and again and again and again

the studio version seems to be unfinished and does not really make sense, but it IS an anti war song, you can guess that because in live versions he improved the text so that it really seems to be an anti war song ( listen to the L@TG garden version of it, there it is very clear what he's talking about)

in the first Golfwar a Yellow BEDletter was the name for letter that told the family of a dead soldier, well that he was dead

"Unsealed on a porch a letter sat" i guess this one is the letter

"And they called and I said that "I want what I said" and then I call out again.
And the reason oughta' leave her calm, I know."

and you can interprt these lines that a peron calls god and says that he/she wants his relative back,(i want what i said), but god says no, and the reason i oughta' leave her calm, well you see it doesn't really make sense

i think ledbetter is a song best left unanalised sometimes. its just such a powerful mix of music (especially the guitar part) and words that make ledbetter so fucking amazing

The title comes from a combination of this and also Mike's guitar part is strongly influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughn (?) and Ledbetter was the name of the street he lived on i think.

The lyrics are just lots of ideas Ed came up with, it is in some ways war related.
Situations get fucked up and turned around sooner or later...

mmm... i think on the 2003 tour a lot of times he changed the lyrics to saying he wanted the soldiers to come home
“ ahh…. Yaa…. If you trust me at all… if you wanna listen to me at all… which you certainly don’t have to. Speaking from experience I can tell you that things change. You could believe me, you don’t have to. They probably won’t change, unless you make them. The best way to change something around you, something you don’t like, is.. to change yourself. I don’t think you want other people changing you.. I think.. I think.. the only person you want changing you… is yourself. So if you ain’t happy…. If you’re reading magazines about generation x’s and thinking ‘ya im one of them’ well fuck that…. Don’t let anybody tell you who you are. No… No…. No one can tell me who I am. I can tell you who I am but that would be a long story… I can tell you who I am and it wouldn’t fit in a Rolling Stone…. It wouldn’t fit in a video… it wouldn’t… its my life…. Its your life. Youre the only one that knows who you are. I hope you know who you are. If you don’t know who you are, figure it out. Cause you are some body. And Im probably stating the obvious. But I just thought I would do it anyway. So if you fell like you got a piece of duct tape on your mouth, if you feel like you cant speak. Take it off, Speak up. Speak your Mind. Shout it Out. Let ‘em Hear Ya. Shout it out…… YAAA YAAAAA yAAAAAAAAAAA.” Eddie Vedder (Porch ’96 Randle Island 2)
