If Weezer can do it (covers album), why not Pearl Jam?

SpartanacusSpartanacus Oviedo, FL Posts: 821
Weezer just released a surprise covers album (The Teal Album) to tide over their fans (not that they ever have to wait too long) for the upcoming The Black Album.

Not sure when PJ will put out another studio album, but it would be nice to get some signs of life from this band (Can't Deny Me was a decent start but we hungry), as being in SoCal, and not having had the chance to see them in over 5 years, I feel like they are retired.

It would be awesome if they got together for a long weekend and put out a covers album.  It would be cool to have a lot of their popular live ones, plus a handful of new covers.  How about one Cornell/SG cover, and let all proceeds go to a charity of his families' choice?

Shouldn't fall into that trap. Then the "Christmas album" isn't far away.

Good idea!  I would gladly take any new PJ music or albums.  I don't care if it doesn't seem 'cool'...I just want new music.  But yes, a Christmas album of all their previous holiday songs plus some new ones (including covers) would be great.

Rage's cover album was their last album.  Just like the spaghetti incident was GNR's last album.

To me a covers album is something you do when your exhausted to make something new.   Weezer is probably the except... seems like they did it as more of joke, seeing as they have a real album coming out in a month or so.

If you heard any of this Weezer cover album, you would know why it’s a bad idea. Although, I’m sure Pearl Jam would put more effort into it

I think they did it because of their boring Africa cover taking off.

I don't get the point in doing covers and not fusing your own band into the music. So pointless doing "1:1" covers. (No scubs didn't even excite me)

    THANK GOD FOR MARILYN MANSON

I think we have more than enough live covers to hold us over. I liked the idea by Weezer. And Metallica's and Rage Against The Machine's cover albums are good....but I just wouldn't want one from Pearl Jam.

On second thought, sure, why not? I guess a covers album is better than nothing.

I say yes.  Then when people bitch because they "paid to see a Pearl Jam show, I wanna hear Pearl Jam songs" I can just roll my eyes and post a pic of the cover album.

Usually a band does this when they haven't got anything left in the tank or it gives them some much needed publicity.

    PJ doesn't need either.

That being said if I didn't hear YLB, Baba, or RITFW for last encore next tour and heard something new and fresh in a cover I would be very happy.

For 20 years Weezer was second only to PJ for me. But I've finally given in, couldn't even bring myself to buy Pacific Daydream. After several complete flops,  I did enjoy the White album so I thought they might have more in them.
They need to stop putting out an album a year and write some decent music first.

Weezer's approach to music has always had a subtle "tongue in cheek" vibe throughout their career. Dropping Teal totally fits their style and manner. A "covers" album doesn't quite jive with PJ. If they even came close, which they won't, they might go as far as collection of live versions of covers, but they wouldn't need to because we (bootleg fans) could make or own just as easy.

I know a lot of you are too cool for school so you may not know this, but that song has been on top 40 radio's infinite repeat for the last eight months.

they recorded it as a result of an online campaign to get them to do so. they had originally covered Rosanna, which didn't make the same waves as Africa did.

Rivers can make good music but also likes to have plain good fun. that's all this is.

I think Weezer did this because Africa took off & their fans wanted more. They are releasing a new album with new material soon as well.

They really nail the covers they perform.  Non Pearl Jam fans have conversated with me (knowing Im a fan) at various times about a clip or video they stumbled upon and how great they did.

It would be a way to penetrate the mainstream a bit and get a lot of radio airplay.  Also would probably sell more albums than they would with things like Lightning Bolt.

I cannot picture them in a studio recording cover songs though

They have many cover songs recorded. There might be more in the vault. Just release those in a compilation
