Yeah, way too fast. It's hard for me to listen to 2006 shows.

Found: Soundgarden Hyde Park DVD (Thank you for the gift!)

    Greenville 2016
    (Raleigh 2016)
    Columbia 2016

Some songs faster some not.  The more I go back though, I find the ones that are just too amped up nowadays sound actually okay in comparison on earlier tours were they were faster but not hyper space.

The harder edge songs I don't mind if they speed up some, but I don't need to hear Given or wishlist or Off He Goes played at breakneck speed.  Just doesn't do it for me.

I still dont get why songs are sped up.  Isnt it easier for Eddie to sing at normal speed?

Some/most definitely yes.  Others I think it is a combo of desire to play it a half beat or so faster, others still I think it is adrenaline through the years.

I never even gave that a thought's thought until saw this thread.  I gues I knew it subconsciously but never gave it 2 thoughts.  Now that you bring it out.  To me its like duh,,,
Is that the strategy on how they make it through 30 + songs a night?
Ill never be able to listen again without the annoyance of the speed singing. Lol
Yeah all those songs are way to fast.  Jeremy. Given, Why Go, Better Man is super fast you're right, (geeze)  Much better at album speed.

On their last episode, the gentlemen at Single Podcast Theory put together a little demo of how much faster "Given To Fly" is nowadays by juxtapositioning a 1998 live version with a 2016 live version. The difference really is "jarring."

I agree. I actually the 2006 tour. Sane absolutely incredible sets, and EV was vocally in point.
  • Just heard "Black" from Cleveland 2003. Holy shit, talk about slow. I could actually hear each opening chord on Stone's resonator.

2006 was indeed great. Solid performances of the older stuff and still playing most of their later stuff (but yet to start playing all that BS, er....Backspacer).

Some of that is pacing but some of this also his choice of guitars in 2003 and 2005 (I think he was using them some in 2006 too, but I am not as steeped in that tour)  When Ratsound figured out how to make his acoustics fill an arena and he began sliding away from the duotone electric for certain songs it was a really great mix.  To me, 2003 through 2009 are some Stones best playing with Pearl Jam.

Agreed - some of that was purposeful vibe!

Loving the 06 tour or not =/= they were playing the fastest.

I LOVE the 2006 tour. Feel like it was the last tour before they went all in on the "we are here to entertain you" thing.

I’m a drummer. Do you really think he dictates the tempo? In other words, don’t you think if even if just EV wanted it played slower, it would be played slower? MC is a world class drummer who can keep tempo at any speed and play crazy time signatures with ease.

GTF and SOLAT are the two songs that suffer the most from this problem.  I find myself skipping GTF a lot in the post 2006 tours.

    100%
SOLAT has become near unlistenable live. One of my favourite songs but the album or 1994 versions will always make a playlist over anything in the last 15 years.

Yeah. That’s the weird thing in these tempo discussions. They think Matt is screwing up or going off adrenaline. The dude is a total pro and can keep tempo at whatever the band wants the tempo to be.

True. I was listening to a version of "Animal" from the 2000 tour - I think is as Pittsburgh. It seemed way too fast.

(Oddly enough, the Pittsburgh 2013 version is probably the best one from the past decade)
