Nothing as it seems

Nothing as it seems is Pearl Jams Masterpiece for me but I can't get the whole sense of this song, can anyone help me?
Where does this song point to? To who does it speak to, what's the audience?
I'm asking this because I have to head a discussion in school about an 'article' and I choosed this songtext and I'm sure there will be much to discuss.
Thank you! :)

You don't have to grab the lyrics, I provide them:
[Lyr]
Don't feel like home. He's a little out.
And all these words elope. It's nothing like your poem.
Putting in. Inputting in. Don't feel like methadone.
A scratching voice all alone it's nothing like your baritone.

It's nothing as it seems. The little that he needs. It's home.
The little that he sees. Is nothing he concedes. It's home.

One uninvited chromosome. A blanket like the ozone.

It's nothing as it seems. All that he needs. It's home.
The little that he frees is nothing he believes.

Saving up a sunny day. Something maybe two tone.
Anything of his own. A chip off the corner stone.
Who's kidding? Rainy day. A one way ticket headstone.
Occupations overthrown. A whisper through a megaphone.

It's nothing as it seems. The little that he needs. It's home.
The little that he sees is nothing he concedes. It's home.
And all that he frees. A little bittersweet. It's home.
It's nothing as it seems. The little that you see it's home.

  • I was just thinking about how much I love this song... and some people can't stand it... I find it beautiful.
Nobody sits like this rock sits. You rock, rock. The rock just sits and is. You show us how to just sit here and that's what we need.

Well, but you cannot help me?
Erm, I didn't know that there are really people who don't like this song or even masterpiece...anyway...if they knew what they miss...

thats what I got, at a glance looks the same
The only thing I enjoy is having no feelings....being numb rocks!

And I won't make the same mistakes
    (Because I know)
Because I know how much time that wastes

At this time, NAIS is my favorite PJ song (it changes frequently though). I know where your coming from. The lyrics don't seem to have a solid base I guess you could say, unlike Black for example. I think that the song is about a man who is emotionally, physically, and mentally lost and is searching for what will make him whole. I don't know, I'm still trying to figure it out. The song acts like a drug for me, its wonderful. I feel in love with it the minute I heard it. Doesn't Mike just ROCK the solo????

Oh yes, I can figure out what you're trying to say with '...feel in love...' I felt in love as well in my 'PJ-Career' well it's I think my really fav. song which i can listen to for 1000000000000000000 times and even more. Maybe it's exactly becase we cannot figure out exactly what the lyrics means....?

  • Im pretty postive this song is about down syndrome.
    "one uninvited chromosome...etc"
"a blanket like the ozone" refers to how that one chromosome protects him from the world and how hard it can be. it also chokes off any deep knowledge connection he could have with others.

He has a harsh startling voice that will never be poetic and he just wants something for himself

I love this song also. The first time I heard it, during the Bridge School streaming performance back in '99, I and others were blown away by it.

This song to me, is more about addiction and the trials a family will go through when dealing with, in this case, the dad, and his addictions.
I relate it to my own father who was an alcoholic. Our family was torn apart, ending in divorce when I was small.

""Don't feel like home. He's a little out.
And all these words elope. It's nothing like your poem.
Putting in. Inputting in. Don't feel like methadone.
A scratching voice all alone it's nothing like your baritone.""

In the lyrics, the man can't seem to find what's missing in his life.
It's been right in front of him the whole time but he can't see it.

""It's nothing as it seems. All that he needs. It's home.
The little that he frees is nothing he believes.""

As the offspring of an alcoholic, I've always always been leary of the addictive gene that was born into me. It's kept me away from abusing drugs and alcohol. I know me, and I know it is something that I could fall into.....bad enough I smoke the butts like an addict. If I allowed myself, I could become a 'chip off the cornerstone', but fortunately, I have enough sense not to ever let that happen.

""One uninvited chromosome. A blanket like the ozone.

Saving up a sunny day. Something maybe two tone.
Anything of his own. A chip off the corner stone.""

Sadly, for my dad, the alcoholism eventually killed him back in the mid 80s. He lived no where near us, we had all reconciled in a way, but his illness had destroyed our family, and the family he began before he met my mom.

""Saving up a sunny day. Something maybe two tone.
Anything of his own. A chip off the corner stone.
Who's kidding? Rainy day. A one way ticket headstone.
Occupations overthrown. A whisper through a megaphone.""

There is a lyric change from when it was first played at Bridge.

    Originally the line
'Occupations overthrown. A whisper through a megaphone'

    was...

'A whisper through a megaphone, a family to be overthrown'

I like both versions of the sentiment, but I think I prefer the original Bridge line.
It's exactly as it was for us,

    A Family to be Overthrown.

this is just my personal take on these lyrics, it's certainly up to interpretation. I love this band and how you can take away what you need to hear personally. This was a healing song for me when it came out....
    just awesome.

I look at these lyrics in blocks of two lines:

Don't feel like home. He's a little out.
And all these words elope. It's nothing like your poem.

-He does not have a sense of belonging even though he is trying to show a confident face. His profession may be in writing and it’s impulsive now, not crafted.

Putting in. Inputting in. Don't feel like methadone.
A scratching voice all alone it's nothing like your baritone.

-Sounds like Mark Lanagan of Screaming Trees maybe isnt’ what he used to be.

It's nothing as it seems. The little that he needs. It's home.
The little that he sees. Is nothing he concedes. It's home.

-He could have a sense of belonging, but refuses even though it could help him out. People are willing to help him out if he asks for it.

One uninvited chromosome. A blanket like the ozone.
    -Unplanned pregnancy starts a family.

It's nothing as it seems. All that he needs. It's home.
The little that he frees is nothing he believes.
-Even though he is willing to put up appearances and provide for his family he is not satisfied. Again, people are willing to help him, but he is not willing to accept their help.

Saving up a sunny day. Something maybe two tone.
Anything of his own. A chip off the corner stone.
-He is willing to work hard to provide for his family, and create a home that they can feel comfortable in. What he is willing to share are things, but the foundation is not secure, there is a little misgiving within him.

Who's kidding? Rainy day. A one way ticket headstone.
Occupations overthrown. A whisper through a megaphone.
-When I attended classes to be a chemical dependency counselor I learned that if a person loses his job due to drugs that’s the last straw. More people care about their jobs than their families. So, he realizes where he’s headed, all is not roses, and a comfortable house because he lost his job. Still, the person most hard on himself is himself, and he is not willing to face himself.

It's nothing as it seems. The little that he needs. It's home.
The little that he sees is nothing he concedes. It's home.
    -See Above

And all that he frees. A little bittersweet. It's home.
It's nothing as it seems. The little that you see it's home.
-He could have it all that we are suppose to want, the bittersweet part is that he is not willing to access that part of him anymore. He is willing to give of himself to let others enjoy life. However he is not willing to give to himself to be free. He hasn’t totally given up, though since he can find a little to be thankful for. That was fun!
