Good taste. My bud turned me on to him. Was a tough ride for my eardrums and brain but finally got it.

I saw Zappa and the Mothers in the early70's when they had become just "The Mothers", having dropped "of Invention" from their moniker.  The most pleasant surprise of that show was discovering what a marvelously talented guitarist Zappa was playing live.  Up to that point, I had been mostly aware of his role as composer and singer but, man, that guy could play!  What a bummer that we lost him so early.

  • I'm pretty sure a lot of you have never seen this before.

This is a very young Frank Zappa playing a bicycle Rim!

Something else about him was he didn't do drugs.  Go figure...

There are at least a few of them.  Which did you read?

25 Years! I didn't realize that it had been that long. Wow.

I have 2 guy friends who absolutely love him and at one time they each have tried to get me into Zappa. The songs that have stuck with me, though I could never say that they completely converted me are

Peaches 'en Regalia is of course classic.

  • I think my dad sings parts of this song every other time I see him. And have done so since I was a kid. So I must have heard my dad sing the "Tv-dinner by the pool..." part a million times:

I work at a family friendly restaurant and 'dinomo hum' comes on the radio every now and then. It's too low to hear the lyrics but oh my!!

If you're new to Zappa don't give up. Try "Joe's Garage'. I had "shut up and play your guitar'. No singing. Just guitar jams.
  • Sheikh Yerbouti is an absolute masterpiece.  I think they are all recorded live songs too?

  • My favorite Zappa shit is his first two live albums without The Mothers. They're the ones that have Flo & Eddie from The Turtles on vocals. The first one is called "Filmore East" and the second one is "Just Another Band From LA." Check them out if you're not familiar with them. Learn all about Billy The Mountain and his wife Ethel.
