I love how David Griffin and the Pelicans negotiated the draft picks. Besides this year’s #4 the other two will come when Lebron is either retired or pushing 40.
Yes, great deal for the Pelicans. When the Lakers are rebuilding again and have good draft position the Pelicans (I think) can take that draft spot. I know there is language about protected/unprotected in there. Waiting for the final analysis.
2019 —#4
2021 goes to the Pelicans if its #1-8.
If the Lakers keep 2021 then 2022 goes to the Pelicans (unprotected)
2023 —- the Pelicans can swap picks with the Lakers if the Lakers have a better pick
2024—- goes to the Pelicans (unprotected)
2025 —- the Pelicans can swap picks with the Lakers if the Lakers have a better pick
Looks a lot like the Celtics/Nets deal for Pierce and Garnett a few years ago. Pelicans definitely got good value.
So Lakers are a favorite now for the west because they added AD?
I don't see it.
Someone please explain how this makes them elite now?
LBJ and AD's game doesn't seem to mesh well.
Prove me wrong. What am I missing?
Obviously they've gotten much better, but it's just the bookmakers protecting themselves because they know they are going to get bombarded with Lakers bets. They're already a huge public team and now they just added one of the best players in the league...people eat that shit up.
Exactly. Its all about betting money at this point (the landscape of the league is about to shift greatly after July 1 and nobody knows exactly how everything shakes out). Its kind of like the Yankees always having low odds regardless of how realistic their shot at the WS is, lots of NY money in Vegas, lots of Laker money bet in Vegas.

With all these one and done players now a days the draft doesn't seem to mean much anymore. Look at the last 5 years and the first 10 players drafted.
Only the #1 player drafted has been a big impact. You can argue that Tatum and Doncic are too but for the most part the draft is one and done too.

I wouldn't go that far. Picks 2-10 have produced a few impact guys the last 5 years:
2014: Embiid 2015: Russell, Porzingis (when healthy) 2016: Brown, Hield, Murray 2017: Tatum, Fox 2018: Doncic, Young (hard to judge this class after only one season, lots of time for guys to still develop)
Certainly some of these guys need a couple seasons before making a significant impact, that's cause a lot of them are 19 or 20 when they enter the league.
Look at Paul George or Kawhi's first couple of seasons, not a true indication of what they became.
With adding Conley, they will jump high into this conversation. I don't think they can win it all, but they could give it a good push if they stay healthy. Need to add some depth, especially at PG as Conley will miss some time and Exum can't be relied on.
Conley may be the perfect guy to play alongside Mitchell and within the Jazz system. He is elite in Pick and Roll offense and the Jazz love that. Gobert/Favors (who will likely stay now) will love having him on board. Conley is the most under appreciated PG in the league.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me

I think it is premature to say this. still have some good players. i think it depends on if the young players grow more this next year than last year. also you have to see if Hayward can come back to what he was before his injury or if he is done. I think Boston not going for AD was a smart move to be honest. I can see again 4-5 top teams in the east next year. if Leonard signs in toronto , they have to be the favorite if not they go down to maybe the 4th or 5th best team in the east depending on Free agency.

Thanks for your well-explained response. Not the biggest basketball person. The Raptors peaked my interest and I really enjoyed the playoffs...still learning.
