Eddie Speech Impediment?

Heatherj43Heatherj43 Posts: 1,254
This may be something everyone already has talked about...but does Eddie have a speech impediment. I, personally, think so! When I went to my first PJ concert, I asked my bf what country Eddie is from because he seemed to have a foreign accent. Then, when I watch the dvd's I can clearly see that he has some problem with how his mouth moves to form words. Especially when he tries to use "th" at the end of words. I think that's why so many people have their own take on the lyrics of the songs,(besides the fact that Eddie will change them as he feels the desire). Anyway, I just wondered if anyone knows if I'm correct in what I see and hear. I do think he has an amazing voice and I think the speech thing adds to the mystique of the songs. Thanks...Heather

  • Not sure, although I agree in all the bootlegs I have he does seem to ponder over words to say during a speech. But hell he may just be a bit nervous. Shit I would be if 10,000 people were listening to everyword I had to say!

Okay. I just hear it in his words and see it in his mouth movements. I have a sister with severe speech problems and I thought I was seeing a similar thing. That's why initially I thought he was from some European country and why I think there is such conrtoversy all the time over lyrics...but maybe I'm wrong. if I'm correct though, it gives great hope to kids with speech problems, eh?

I have never heard this. I don't think so but if it makes him sound as great as he does then so be it!

He does have sort of a strange inflection that I've noticed - it sounds almost like a southern accent without the twang. And he has a way of leaving out or slurring consonants. It makes his voice sound kind of warm. :)

  • I don't think he sounds that way when he's talking though, so I don't think it's any kind of speech thing. But I could be wrong. I am a spaz, you know.

If you listen to interviews and boots you'll notice that his voice changed a lot over the years so it may be possible that he developped an impediment.
  • On bootlegs, it's probably just the WINE!!!

  • I actually haven't heard him speak more than a few words in recent years. Back in the early days when he did interviews, he did slur an awful lot, but i always assumed he was drunk :)

  • I don't think it's a speech impediment he just talks "tight lipped".

I don't think he has a speech impediment. But have you ever noticed the way he kind of empasizes the c sound. (or is it just me) Like when he says Can't Keep, InsignifiCance, and a face in the Clouds; just a few examples.
Anyway, I love that, and I love Ed's voice!
  • I don't think so, in the Single Video theory DVD he seems completely comfortable talking and being interviewed (other than the boom microphone almost hitting him).

  • He doesn't have an impediment. If you listen to SVT he just sounds unusual. He definitely has an unusual accent for an american - sort of "old worldly" if you know what I mean.

He talks like he's from another era for some reason - in a really lovely kind of way.

I seriously doubt if he has a speach impediment - - haven't we all gotten stuck for words at some point, speaking in public? Just because he's a performer onstage doesn't mean that addressing the crowd will always be perfect, or any public speaking for that matter.... he still strikes me as "shy" (has to force himself to "speak" publically when he could easily just go from song to song without doing so like so many other artists do).

I agree that at concerts, it's probably the wine.

But, as far as hesitating in his speech, I really believe he is just very thoughtful and mindful of what he says, and he chooses his words very carefully, giving each word the same importance as the last.

  • i do the same thing when I play with my band if I say something. It's kinda nervewracking....from recorded interviews I've heard, Ed's very confident and strong with his words. I dunno.
...but don't quote me on that...
  • My mother and i were listening to some boots and interviews from various years, and we both agreed that eddie has really nice diction. His speaking voice is really pretty, dare i say....sexy? Heh anyways i love the way he talks, it seems like he's so carful and delicate with the way he pronounces his words, it's so adorable.

But back on the speach impediment topic. I noticed a slight lisp as i was listening to the monkey wrench 98 recording. He had trouble with the "s" sound.

  • Not sure what you mean by that, and I'm Australian. I think that the sound of Ed's voice and accent is wonderful and he seems quite articulate to me.
