A Lined Face

I sparked on scratch paper in pencil first,
unmasked tentatively in temporary marks.
When promoted to ink in confidence drawn
I manifested presence determinedly pushed.

I was a line sequentially mapping sight, smell
and taste in biological order. My bowed
itinerary through curvy landmarks swallowed pulp
decisively until finally pulled.

Stoically, I guarded the imagined
and experiential, walled in and out, nature
and culture filled with historical relevance
in lines subject to the fate of the self.

I was a gift courageously given,
an employed still life expecting applause,
but he crumbled my nose into my chin
arresting peaked romance in grief undrawn.
