  • The vocal melody is rather similar, and I guess the chord progression is too, but other than that I always think the similiarites between these songs are overstated. :)

  • I have boths songs in my playlist right now!
    ...
  • I remember in some magazine a long time ago Mike saying someting about one of his influences being Jimmy Page and then he started talking about the riff in G2F. I don't think the comparison is that big of a stretch
Yes, and thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes. I thought it was there for good so I never tried.

Here's the tabs for both songs. I once had someone tell me that the guitar parts for these two songs were the same. I don't think so. There are a few similarities, but nothing remotely close to a copyright violation or anything. In fact, nothing where I would even notice the similarity from the guitar alone.

So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone. And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow. But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself. It is best to compose a poem, an honest longing or simple song of hope.
    That is why I'm singing

no he cant. because its not true. Robert Plant came out and stated they were flattered by the use of their riff... and pearl jam has acknowledged the songs are very similar...

5:08 Seconds Into Red Mosquito (track 6) Oslo Norway Disc 1 Boot... eddie says
"This next song has one of the most beautiful melodies ever written and, uh, its called 'Given to fly to california"

and then Given to Fly is track 7.

I beleive that puts to rest any further doubt regarding this issue.

I think to a certain extent it's a joke, since the media made such a big deal of the similarites. Because if you look at the tabs I put links to earlier, they're not that similar.

tabs arent music. tabs are ways to make songs sound like songs... Im sure i can go find two tabs on different sites that are both for Given to Fly, and they wont look that similar.

i would agree with your point about it being a joke had he not stated that "its one of the most beautiful melodies" line... He wouldnt say that about one of their own songs, especially without attributing it to Mike, Stone or Jeff (he would never be that ego-tistical unless he was directing it as a complement...

also, the its less likely to be a joke because it was the 2000 Tour. (as opposed to the 98 yield tour). so it was a moot point by then... and he was in Oslo, Norway, where strikes me as an odd place to make a joke that most of the crowd may not have even gotten...

  • It was definitely an issue...I remember reading Pete Townshend talked to Jimmy Page so they dropped the whole lawsuit idea.

Here's a small article on it:

I also remembered reading somewhere that Stone Gossard's response was "I have two words for Jimmy Page: Muddy Waters."

    I liked that...
