I remember reading about another town somewhere where the gas lines going to various  houses formed leaks and started causing explosions.  I grew up in a neighborhood that had gas line going to all the house around our area.  In retrospect, that seems like a foolish idea.  I don't know though though- maybe no more dangerous than a propane take with a line to the house like we have.
