sometimes i think songs are best absorbed when you make up your own mind as to what it is about. really good lyrics often leave the real interpretation of the song wide open, and up to the individual listener to determine what the song is about. this is why pearl jam have always appealed to me. their lyrics have that unique personal quality to them. songs can have more than one theme in the lyrics. sometimes it can be partly about the music and sometimes it's about the way the lyrics are shaped around the chord progressions. i sometimes find the meaning in the chorus, sometimes the theme is in the verses.
having said all that...i believe that cropduster is about the circle of life. how life goes on and on, even when you aren't there anymore to see it unfold. it's about your life being unique to yourself and learning as you grow older, only to die with all that knowledge from lessons learned.
cropduster was one of those songs that i didn't recognize with my first listen of riot act. it truely grew into a great song for me, one of my favourites off riot act. often i find the songs that don't click right away are sometimes the ones that end up being the most powerful/meaningful to me later on. during the riot act tour this became the new "sleight of hand" for me. a cherished nugget.
side note:
what REALLY amazes me is that some artists write songs with NO words at all and yet they say it's about this and that. try and get your head around that concept
The song Cropduster stood out for me on Riot act, along with ghost, as two of the best Pearl Jam songs ever. I spend a lot of time out doors in the wild etc. and cropduster is awesome to listen to out there. happy holidays!

Its about how we belong to the world not the other way round.
This kinda follows on from Do The Evolution to me.
