Songs Never Played in Boston

This list encompasses the 25 shows Pearl Jam has played in Boston and the immediate surrounding area up to the forthcoming 2018 Fenway Park shows. The two 2013 Worcester shows are not included. Worcester never gets any respect. It doesn’t change anything, but the ’92 Lowell show is included in play counts since its roughly the same distance from downtown Boston as Mansfield, which I think everyone considers a Boston show…. Boston has been very good to PJ. From ’98 to 2010, the band played 14 shows in and around Boston, which I believe is more than anywhere else they played during that stretch of time. Due to the band’s attempt to play every song in its catalog in that infamous 3-show run in July of ’03, there aren’t many ‘lost dogs’ as far as Boston is concerned. But here goes:

Songs never played in Boston:

Bugs
Around the Bend
No Way
Big Wave
Gonna See My Friend
Johnny Guitar
Amongst the Waves
Supersonic
Speed of Sound
The End

All Night
Black Red Yellow
Brother
Fatal (*)
Hold On (**)
Let Me Sleep
Of the Earth
Other Side (*)
Setting Forth

-Covers never played in Boston:

All Along The Watchtower
Arms Aloft
Gimme Some Truth
Harvest Moon
I’m Waiting For the Man
I Won’t Back Down
Kick Out The Jams
Let My Love Open The Door
Picture in a Frame
Rain
The Boys Are Back In Town
The Real Me
Throw Your Hatred Down

It’s Okay

-W.M.A. has been tagged but never played in full

--The original swing on the Lightning Bolt tour (’13) stopped in Worcester (apprx 45 miles from Boston) for two shows. If you were to add those shows in, of the Lightning Bolt LP songs, only “Getaway” has never been played in, or somewhat near Boston. Without those Worcester shows, Getaway, My Father’s Son, Infallible, Swallowed Whole, Let the Records Play and Future Days have not yet been played in Boston.

(*) Fatal and Other Side were both played in Worcester in 2013.

(**) PearlJam.com lists “Hold On” as being played on the 4/11/1994 show at Boston Garden. That’s incorrect. What the band actually played that night was a rambling improv that had the words Hold On in it – that segued into Jeremy. I believe the actual song “Hold On” was not played until 10/30/2009 in Philadelphia.

Songs that have made live debuts in Boston:

Immortality (4-11-94, Boston Garden)
Bleed For Me (9-28-04)
Lion’s Share [Germs cover] (9-29-04, only time played)
Forever Young (5-24-06, Bob Dylan's 65th birthday, only time ever at PJ show)
Parachutes (5-25-06, 1st of 22 performances)
Draw the Line [Aerosmith] (8-5-16)

I love stats like this thanks! Chloe Dancer has never been played in Boston I believe. I know there are plenty of covers that have not been played but that one stands out to me the most.

    I wanna hear You Are.

5 shows so far this summer and no You Are.

I want a little You Are dammit.

You're right. I just grabbed covers that stuck out to me. But Chloe Dancer is another one that has yet to come up in Boston.

I would say that "Getaway", "Let Me Sleep" and "I Won't Back Down" have decent odds to be played.

Since 2011 I believe every version of Crown has included the Choe intro, so IF they play it at Fenway it will almost certainly include the Chloe intro.

It is listed on livefootsteps for Atlanta 2003, but O'Brien just played the intro keys pretty much like Las Vegas 2000 to the best of my recollection, beyond that the full companion piece with vocals began in 2011.
His eminence has yet to show.

  • Be interested to see how differing the sets are from 2016.  I wonder if he takes a peak to remember what they played last time as opposed to this time.  I assume we'll get the Cornell cover (along with others) and Can't Deny Me.  They covered a lot of ground in 2016, so unless they make some drastic changes, they can't change it up too, too much.

Any check and see the differences between Wrigley 2016 and 2018?

If we get Missing and Again Today at the Fens I’ll be a happy human. Severed Hand, Marker, Can’t Deny Me, and Of the Earth are also songs I would looooove to hear. That would be four debuts in Boston though. Seeing the set lists it seems they tend to repeat a lot of songs in Boston they don’t normally play elsewhere which is a little strange.

  • Would love to hear Future Days on Night 1, will be with my wife at the show and we had the song played during our wedding ceremony.
Then follow it up with Dirty Frank!

Wrigley shows have shown to be heavy on the hits with a mix of deep cuts and lesser known fan favs.

They’ve performed 99 different songs and 163 total so far at Wrigley.

Looking at all five Wrigley shows, Riot Act and Binaural have gotten almost no play. I Am Mine is the only song they’ve played at Wrigley – once (8-22-16) off Riot Act. Breakerfall (8-18-18) and Light Years (8-20-16) each made single appearances off Binaural, but that’s it.

There are some surprises. Given To Fly has been played just 2x of the five Wrigley gigs. Not For You only once, but that’s become a lesser played song in recent tours for whatever reason.

Some songs that haven’t come up at Wrigley gigs yet: Once, Indifference, Red Mosquito, Brain of J, MFC, In Hiding, Spin the Black Circle, Fuckin’ Up.

I'd be interested in hearing the whole band play Forever Young. It was just Ed on harmonica and Jeff on guitar at the Garden in 2006. Think it would make a great second encore song if the whole band were in on it.
