Corduroy

Great song, any ideas of its meainig?

By nine, he deciphered the illusion, trading magic for fact, no trade-backs
So this is what it's like to be an adult?

Its Eddie rejecting the Jesus status of his fame in my opnion. Amazing song.

I read a piece somewhere that said that 'Corduroy' refers to a jacket that someone fashioned after ed's beige corduroy jacket (look at some of the early 90's photos and you'll see it lots) and was selling in a department store. Grunge fashion a la vedder, so to speak.

"I don't want to hear from those who know.
They can buy but can't put on my clothes.
I don't want to wait for them to walk.
Never would have known of me before".

I think the most powerful line in Corduroy is

"Take my hand... not my picture"

I'm sure he'd still say the same today...
Exercising her will to lose control...
    she lets go
  • wow, I never thought or heard of that interpratation before, and it totally seems to work.....take my hand, not my picture....yea, now that's my favorite line in the song too.....thanks guys
Hell; a paticular realm of the after life where they never play Pearl Jam
  • I like this song because, to me, the words seem more angry than the music they're sung to. It's kinda like talking to an infant or a dog. You can say something downright mean, but if you do it in that sickeningly sweet voice infants and dogs drive people to talk in, then it sounds okay.

And, embarrasssingly enough, I think i was the dog for a while. I think i was listenging to song, but not necessarily 'hearing' it. (Also in my defense, 12-94 was pre-internet for me and I had a lot of the words wrong in a lot of songs before I got online to see a collaboration of lyrics) Let me use, for example, the line 'I would rather starve than eat your bread'. For a long time I thought it was like he was making a willing sacrifice. Now it comes across, to me, as a much more spiteful line. I think the tone of the song turned for me when I was listening to it thru headphones and picked up the "I though you were a friend, but I guess I...I guess I hate you now" line towards the end.
  • ok, thanks a lot seems plausible to me ^^

I read somewhere that it was about a relationship with millions of people, so I think of it as Ed talking to us fans
  • Yes, the atmosphere it gives off is really great.
  • yeh most of youseem to have it bang on the nose its pretty much edved
rejecting his own success and others making money etc off pj success bladdy blah blah
"all the things that others want from me cant take what i want because its free"

  • Here's the lyrics off of lyricsfreak.com:

The waiting drove me mad...you’re finally here and I’m a mess
I take your entrance back...can’t let you roam inside my head
I don’t want to take what you can give...
I would rather starve than eat your bread...
I would rather run but I can’t walk...
Guess I’ll lie alone just like before...

I’ll take the firmest path...oh, and I must refuse your test
    A-push me and I will resist...this behavior’s not unique
I don’t want to hear from those who know...
They can buy, but can’t put on my clothes...
I don’t want to limp for them to walk...
Never would have known of me before...
I don’t want to be held in your debt...
And I’ll pay it off in blood, let I be wed...
And I’m already cut up and half dead...
I’ll end up alone like I began...

Everything has changed, absolutely nothing’s changed
Take my hand, not my picture, spilled my tincture

I don’t want to take what you can give...
I would rather starve than eat your breast...
All the things that others want for me...
    Can’t buy what I want because it’s free... (2x)
Can’t be what you want because i’m...

    I ain’t s’posed to be just fun
Oh, to live and die, let it be done
I figure I’ll be damned, all alone like I began...

    It’s your move now...
I thought you were a friend, but I guess i, I guess I hate you...
"So i'll just lie alone and wait for the dream,
where i'm not ugly and your lookin' at me."

  • For some strange reason I think it might be for Kurt Cobain, in a sort-of sympathy, yet angry way. Sympathy of being famous, yet anger over Cobain's actions. But I could be wrong.

i think everyone has summed up all of what i think about this song.

vitalogy was very much the album which had alot of messages to the fans in it....

    corduroy and pry to.

and i agree with what MotorCityMike is saying, that it is a much more angry song than the music itself, very tongue in cheek in a way...with alot of the fans (who went and bought the EXPENSIVE top make corduroy jakets, and wanted to have his autograph more than caring about him as a person more...) thinking it is just a rockin song....but it actual fact he is talking about them! very clever....

    now onto the debate.....
    everything has chains...absolutly nothing's changed...

or, everything has changed, absolutly nothing changed.

im sure ive heard him sing both actually....but i personally find the first to make more sence to me, whether it is correct or not, i see it to mean that nothing has changed about the fact that everything has chains, and i think it fits perfectly with the song....and he feels everything is in chains....nothing is free....people just dont want the music, they want something more....they want a picture, an autograph.....and much more....ya know.

i was saying this once and someone said to me 'well you obviously dont get the song if you thought that!'

well...whatever, this is my interpretation, and i hope people get something out of it.

    There's quite a few interpritations on http://www.theskyiscrape.com

    http://www.theskyiscrape.com/index_alphabetical.html

Look through alphabetically and then theres a link in the top right for the interpritations. I would post an exact link but thats the best i can do.

Corduroy....the jacket was brown corduroy, remember? That just occured to me. Apparently K-Mart, or Walmart (whatever it's called in the US) marketed a little kid's version of the jacket. Like the new 'grunge' look....but in an interview Eddie said he thought that was funny.

This is like my 'filling up' the tank song. I never even knew what the last line was 'til recently...and you know what? It was such a relief that someone wrote those simple words down in a song, you know? Cos it's the kind of thing a little kid will say when they've been hurt - just straight. Whereas when you're an adult you think you're supposed to speak differently when someone cuts you. You're supposed to be logical or something :). That's why I love Pearl Jam so much...cos the feelings and the music are so raw and honest too. Can't ask for much more than that. ;)

I never did make the connection of the title to the song 'til now...doh!

maybe not 'corduroy', but i'm positive 'last exit' was written from cobains point of view, and possibly 'not for you' as well.
Ooooh - they have the internet on computers now.

Great song I was jamming with a few mates the other night and we played it about 3 times. Couldn't get enough of it. I know stone bought the jacket for Eddie in Amsterdam. I think it cost $12

  • corduroy is definitely one of my favourite songs in the pj catalogue. it was there when i first heard it, and it still remains there today. this songs just doesn't tire on me. even with the playing at almost every pj show i still don't get sick of it. in fact i would go so far as to say that if they didn't play it live i would probably be somewhat disappointed because, imho, it is their signature tune. kinda like jimmy buffett doing "margaritaville"

the reason i say it is a signature tune is mainly because of attitude. this tune has tons of attitude. pearl jam have always been about attitude. they have extremely strong beleifs and always stand up for something if they beleive it to be right. attitude is punk. pearl jam are punk. the lyrics are punk and the accompanying music is punk.

    punk rock lives today :)
  • Man this is THE perfect song.
