9 years ago tomorrow...

Sorry for a potentially eye-roll inducing post...and perhaps its just the lingering exhilaration from two great shows at Wrigley this past weekend... but tomorrow will mark the 9th anniversary of my first Pearl Jam show. I became a fan after watching the PJ episode of MTV Unplugged -- something about State of Love and Trust clicked and has not let go to this day. Ten, Singles, Vs -- wore each of these out. For whatever reason, Vitalogy through Binaural didn't land with me right away -- liked everything fine, but these weren't the ones that stayed in my CD player for weeks on end the way Ten and Vs had. I didn't even buy Riot Act (at least not until much later). I liked Avocado, but didn't really spend much time with it until my brother-in-law (OlajuwonsFeet on the message boards) lent me copies of the 2006 shows from the United Center. Eventually, mentioned to him that next time they came around I'd be interested in going to a show...

Which gets us to 8/24/2009...I'd spent time getting reacquainted with the band's catalog, discovered Lost Dogs, listened to a few more bootlegs...then went to the show. The show was great -- I like it more in hindsight than I remember liking it the day of. I was treated to Hard to Imagine, Brother, Crazy Mary -- not to mention got SOLAT at my first show, which was a highlight. My only real regret was not buying a shirt at the show -- which I wanted but talked myself out of because it looked like a Cubs shirt and I'm not a Cubs fan. As an aside -- if anyone has an XL of this shirt that they'd want to trade for another shirt, let me know.

Anyway, getting long-winded here...9 shows in 9 years after this past weekend, and I've been treated to some pretty great moments. PJ20 night 1 is still one of the best concerts that I've ever been to -- 5 shows at Wrigley, No Code in Moline, Temple of the Dog at PJ20 nights 1 and 2.....not bad. Love this band and the passion they bring night in and night out. Love my fellow fans -- it's not just the band that makes the live experience great. And, thanks to my BIL for continuing to bang the drum about PJ live. Took me awhile to come around, but feel like I've seen some shows that made up for the lost time.

  • Those Chicago '09 shows are two of my favorites.  And don't forget about the sweet variant poster s/n by Jeff!
