"Daughter" is probably my favorite PJ song.

But, my interpretation of it is skewed, because I got hooked on it just as my father re-entered my life after 6 years of being completely absent and missing.

It's about a child who lives in an abusive home, she's trying to conform but never seems to get it right, and blames herself for the way her mother treats her,

'....mother reads aloud, child trys to understand it, tries to make her proud,....... the shades go down....'

'...she holds the hand that holds her down.....'

I think mostly about the abuse of trust.

this son is pretty much about a girl, and how her dad just isn't her dad. she never seems to be good enough for her mom. i think her dad walked out on her and her mom and never came back so the mom got left alone with her and doesnt know how to handle her by herself so she basically takes out all her anger on her daughter.

So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone. And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow. But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself. It is best to compose a poem, an honest longing or simple song of hope.
    That is why I'm singing
  • "Daughter" is pretty much about a girl that is abused at home. And then she just always blames herself in the end.
  • I don't think she does. "Don't call me daughter, not fit to"

I see "not fit to" as in "you are unfit to be my parent", not the daughter herself as unfit.

my basic interpretation of the song is sexual abuse by the male "parent"(not necessarily biological).."she holds the hand that holds her down"..sometimes abused kids will strive to please..that can be found in the lyrics too.it can also be seen in other ways, for example,a father who wasn't fit to be deemed as such..but the kid blames herself..thinks she must've done something wrong in order to be treated this way, hence the desperation to please.
i relate to this song in more ways than i'm willing,or ready,to tell.but i like to think that it gave somebody else the courage to speak out...

  • 'dont call me daughter, not fit to'

this means (in my opinion) that the mother shouldnt be calling the girl her daughter because she hasnt been a good mother, the mother is not fit to call the girl her daughter

the "don't call me daughter..not fit to" means that she doesn't want her "dad" or stepdad not to call her daughter because hes treated her like crap her entire life so she doesn't want him calling her daughter becuase she doesnt see him as her dad.

I think Eddie once said the song is about dyslexia. I will try to find that article.

    Here are some words
    I hope this helps you.
It wasn't until a decade ago that `word blindness' or dyslexia was identified. Ten or so years ago, such learning difficulties were interpreted as stubborn, disobedience or plain stupidity. `Daughter' deals with the ignorance surrounding the issue, telling the story of a mother with a dyslexic daughter, whose problem she doesn't understand.
  • see i like the dyslexia theory....it makes a lot of sense... but has anyone ever thought that RVM was kinda like a sequel to daughter?

daughter -> "the shades go down......"

RVM - > "finally the shades are raised"

and i always thought rvm was about some kinda abusive relationship
  • nicoolnicool Posts: 89
ya i think so too.... with the rvm being the sequel to daughter... "wounds in the mirror waved" "saw things so much clearer once you were in my rear view mirror"
You sheltered me from nothing but the weather...

anybody ever read the book "sybil"? there's a lot of similarities.

and i agree about rvm being the sequel.
