Elderly Woman Behind A Counter...

I know... maybe.... at some point some of us might have our own different interpretations of Pearl Jam's songs. But I have a different kind of question.

Does anyone know exactly what "Elderly Woman..." mean?

Is it actually meant for an elderly lady that PJ ran into in a small town that seemed so familiar they decided to write a song about her? And if so what is it exactly they're trying to tell her?

I have my own interpretations of course but I want to know exactly what it means. Does anyone know?
This isn't the land of opportunity, it's the land of competition.

  • I think it is a story of a young couple who broke up and later came across each other by accident in a store. She was working there of course and they had grown old.
