I'm Open

a man lies in his bed in a room with no door
he waits hoping for a presence, something, anything to enter
after spending half his life searching, he still felt as blank
as the ceiling at which he's staring
he's alive, but feels absolutely nothing
so, is he?
when he was six he believed that the moon overhead followed him
by nine he had deciphered the illusion, trading magic for fact
no tradebacks...
so this is what it's like to be an adult
if he only knew now what he knew then...
i'm open
i'm open
come in
come in
come in
come in
i'm open
i'm open
come in
come in
come in
come in
lying sideways atop crumpled sheets and no covers
he decides to dream...
dream up a new self for himself

I sometimes forget how much I love this song!

I love the start of that song, the spoken bit.
One time I was trying to print a picture of me so I could give it to a friend to cheer him up after he was diagnosed with cancer, but the printer jammed, and my friend died.

That is the best part!!! I did think that the moon did follow me where ever I went. I miss those days.

It's advice I bypassed several times while listening to this song. Not until I traded magic for fact did I realize the significance.

    One of my favorites.

  • now can anyone tell me what this song is about?

I love the song, too. especially the spoken start, but does anyone know the meaning behind?
    i hurt myself today,
to see if i still feel,
    i focus all the pain,
    the only thing that´s real...

Personally, I think it's about growing up. It's like Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. Once they ate from the tree of knowledge, their eyes were fully open.

    WOW!!!

thanks for reminding me of that song. I'm open was one of my favorite songs off that album. I guess over the years they have made such great tunes I must've forgot how great it is. Life is what you dream it to be. We sometimes make that mistake of trading magic for "facts". We are told to dream and belive all of our lives but suddenly with out notice from anyone, dreaming just dosent cut it. We grow up and forget what it was like to be a kid and live so open. I'm open to me means I am open for a new begining. I am open to become what I once used to be. I am open to once again be innocent.

    i dont :D

what a song. yes innocence is the main idea i get from this song.
  • This has to be one of my favorites, definitely of No Code, and it's up there on the all time list. The whole thing is just entrancing, from the lyrics to Ed's vocals, to the instrumentals...it strikes the same personal chords for me as In My Tree. I often find refuge in nostalgia and connecting with the kid in me, and these two songs of innocence have always been special to me. Living in the adult world can be such a faceless, lonely, and entrapping thing. Tapping into the mindset of childhood can serve as a true escape, freeing one's imagination and emotions like nothing else, and to me that's what this song is all about. No Code is just something else, and I'm Open is one of many representations of that.

i love this song... AT AGE 6 HE BELIEVED THE MOON FOLLOWED HIM OVERHEAD, BY 9 HE HAD DECIPHERED THE ILLUSION, TRADING MAGIC FOR FACT, NO TRADE-BACKS.... SO THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE AN ADULT

i think that's really timeless. it speaks volumes of how unexpectedly cold and harsh the world can prove itself to be as we grow older and realise that so many of what we believed were snow-angels in our childhood are actually grim reapers, only they appeared angelic to us because of the thick white layers of sugar they were coated with. there is something almost tangible which we loose at some point growing up, i don't know what to name it but the above lines capture it

I recently rediscovered this song too.. I was a relaxing winding down of No Code. I never gave it much attention - other than enjoying it.

In fact for all these years I realized I was singing it wrong..

Don't laugh.. But I have been singing

    I walkin' :-)

its like 'i'm still here'. i think those 2 (songs) go together. to me, 'i'm open' is how life is viewed as a youth and adult, and i'm still here is how when someone who loves you leaves you and it can bring life to a stark realization that things aren't what they used to be. maybe they are saying that if we could think more like a youth, and not be worried, stressed, anxious, etc that maybe the antidepressant market would decrease drastically!

the little things are just as important as the big ones. its when you dont get excited about the foam on a root beer float, or picking wild berries, or hell, even getting tickets to see pj - thats when you become an old prude!
I am the end of all your dreams...
