Given to Fly is about Jesus. It has to be. This song was introduced to me through a boyfriend who is a huge pjammer and it has changed my life and now i am slowly but surely morphing into one myself.
for you I'd bleed myself tryin

It's not about Jesus in the slightest bit, sorry.

I think I am just stubborn...

This thread has come up many times in the past, and I always feel the need to say something. Not sure why. Probably the same reason I get sucked into theological religious debates on some threads.

    However, that being said:

There's something to be said about a song taking on its own meaning to you personally. Many times I have read a lyricist's view on their own lyrics, and they are vastly different than my own views...and sometimes it is disappointing. It's like seeing a video for a song which completely erases the mental pictures you have come up with when you listen to it.

Most people do take what they hear and related to themselves on some personal level, that's what makes a band "moving" and "relivant". How interesting would Pearl Jam or any band be if you couldn't "relate" to their music (words) in some way? As long as one keeps it in perspective and doesn't project one's own personal meaning onto a song or a band as being literally about or for you, then its all good. Words (lyrics) should, on some level, move a person - either emotionally, physically, spiritually,..... ya know?

i dont think there's any one interpretation i've heard of this song that wasnt beatiful. i happen to believe its about Jesus as well....but all the other ways people relate, its just a beautiful song.

You can say that GTF is about Jesus here is my explanation:

Given to fly is somehow the picture of a human being who changed his life extremly( sorry i could not think of a better word)
At the begining of the song he is an outcast who can't handle with his environment and the other people, he withdraws he retires, the situation is getting worse and he runs away,
on his escape he is illuminatied, inspired, he has got his inspiration ( i bet that's not the correct word but whatever)
"A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw."
First time in his life his life got a sense.
This insight( another time not the correct word i bet) gives him wings, he is "given to fly"
Wow he did something right, maybe the first time in his life.
BUT now he knows and everbody else should know who has been jamned in his daily life just like him before.
"he wanted to share his key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere..."
But those who profite from this status quo, those fuckers, those faceless man don't wanna him to share his key to the locks of many many guys.
    They get and kill him.
"but first he was stripped, and then he was stabbed by a faceless man, the fuckers he still stands..."
But they can't stop him, his idea lives on.
"And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky / A human being that was given to fly."

But who the hell is that given to fly guy?
The answers can be different, they depend on the person who asks this question.
Some people say it's Ed himself, after having smoked a joint and going surfing now.
Others say it's Jesus or Che or Steven Biko( who the hell is that?)
i think that every answers is correct and wrong
So given to fly is a song about you and me, about everybody

I'm a big fan of Jesus and I do see the Jesus connection. :)

To me, it seems to be more about that book by I think Jonathan Bachman. I think it's called Illusions about a reluctant messiah that gets killed in the end. I read the book over 10 yrs ago so I forget all the details...

    anyone anyone???

I think I like the Jesus comparison better though
"Do you think the carpetpissers did this?" - The Dude
  • Given to Fly is the story of Eddie Vedder himself. It is a very spiritual song and so the Jesus comparisons make sence, hey maybe Im wrong, dont let me take away from your meaning in any way. But to me the song was always about eddie.

why argue about it? there are many interpretations of the song and each one is just as valid as the next. It's what it means to you that is important, not what it is actually supposed mean.

Yeer I got the Jesus thing too. His love and wanting to free people from their chains every where. "But first he was stripped and then he was stabbed
By faceless men, well, fuckers" yer thats his death.... "He still stands " nope its resembles it pretty closely. Sorry.

I figure the song is not about Jesus, but it definately uses Jesus to make its point...
