Album names

I was considering the album titles by pearl Jam. The 10 album of couse comes from their love of Mookie Blaylock, the vs album seems to be about the "5 against one" idea or a homage to Mission of Burma's record of the same name, vitalogy obviously is named after the book that the liner notes is based on. In terms of the actual word and what vitalogy means I have no idea. No code is hospital jargon, but I have no idea how it relates to the record or the band. Yield, I also have no idea how that relates to the band or the album. Binaural, means something about hearing from both sides or something. But I dont have any idea about its significance to the band or album. Riot Act and the self titled record are self explanatory, riot act (possibly patriot act) and self titled is a return to their core.

So I was wondering can anyone help me decipher what Vitalogy, no code, yield, have to do specifically with the band and the albums of the same name. Seems to me at least, I dont know what they called the records vitalogy, yield, no code, their are no songs on those albums by the same name.

Thanks

  • The only album I can give some insight on is Vitalogy.

The word vitality has similar meaning. It means; the power to live and grow, vital force or principle, ability to survive, ability to continue with meaningful existence. In my mind, this represents many of the lessons in Pearl Jam's songs, not just on the Vitalogy album.

Sorry I can't give any solid connections but it's something!

I think the title No code is sarcastic, cause the album is full of codes, like friendship in Off he goes, live the present (in present tense, obvioulsy), etc.
only love can break your heart
but only love can brake your fall
  • Vita is latin and means Life, -logy means science. The Science of life. There was a swiss Doktor named Huggler who developped a Vitalogy concept. The difference between his and the authentik medecine was that he was not making diagnosis and he didn't use drugs. In his concept the human body is able to heal hisself. He became a lot of problems 'cause he learned his concept to people who weren't doctors and stuff like this.
I think pearl jam used the name sarcastic to show their opinion for the abortion. But I don't think that they a really believing the vitalogy thing.

Theory for yield : maybe it's a warning sing for the listeners, slow down, take your time. let the mainstreem pass and enjoy this album while you are watching the others ( many other cars) passing by and stucking in an traffic jam. Enjoy life, you don't have to drive the highway, take the little streets which are sometimes harder to drive but give you a lot of pleasure. You'll see that you are going to feel free ( think of Given to fly)
Beavis : Is this Pearl Jam?
Butt-head: This guy makes faces like Eddie Vedder.
Beavis: No, Eddie Vedder makes faces like this guy.
Butt-head: I heard these guys, like, came first and Pearl Jam ripped them off.
Beavis: No, Pearl Jam came first.
    Butt-head: Well, they both suck.

Binaural, means something about hearing from both sides or something. But I dont have any idea about its significance to the band or album.

Some of the tracks on Binaural were recorded using 'Binaural recording' which sound best when they are listened to with headphones. (Nothing As It seems, Of The Girl, Rival, Sleight Of Hand & Soon Forget)

  • i think the cover artwork has alot to do with explaining the meaning of Yield. A long stretch of desolate road with a Yield sign curiously placed along the side. It could be a metaphor for life.
die on a hilltop.. eyeing the crows,
waiting for your lids to close..
but you want to watch as they peck your flesh..
Ironic that they go for the eyes first
