Here are possible candidates i think it's about:

layne staley: drug problem

chris cornell: alcohol and depression problem

mike mccready: maybe alcohol, but he's been clean for a while and i think 'habit' was more about mike

johnny ramone: bein a republican yet bein eddie's buddy

    I've always sort of made the link to Mike, but it's taken on it's own thing for me anyway, so I don't really think about that too much anymore when I listen to it.

    Hey guys;
    I listened to a radio interview with Ed where he said the song is kind of about several people, most notably Layne Staley and a little bit of Andrew Wood. I'm sure it's also about others he's known, maybe even himself. Then again, maybe it's just an abstract kind of thing, where it's based on many, many people.

    I don't think there is any way for any of us to tell. It could probably be about just about anyone who is going through a rough time and needs some good energy from a friend.

    I have a radio interview w/ Ed & Mike, and Ed doesn't say who it's for but he mentions that he 'doesn't know if they've heard it'. Considering that
    a) Mike wrote the riff, is in the band, plays it, & was in the room at the time, it's not about him
    b) then it couldn't be about Layne either because he had already passed on.. so i doubt Ed would say that
    c) I'd say its highly unlikely that Chris wouldn't have heard it, so that pretty much rules him out too
    d) He did also say that it could be about anything, but he wrote it for someone with a 'chemical dependence' so I doubt it's about Johnny.
    I hope I didn't just shit all over your theory, it could be right I mean what would I know...?

    why couldn't it be just friends in general? you sure it's a song that goes out to just one person. then again maybe it is.
