  • Its a great song written by Jeff Ament. The first time that they played it live was at the Bridge Benefit concert 2001...three years after it was recorded.

    clouds roll by
    reeling is what they say
or is it just my way
    wind goes by
    low light
    sidetracked
    low light
    can't see my tracks
    your scent...way back
can i be here all alone?
clear a path to my home
    blood runs dry
books and jealousy tell me wrong
    i will feel calm
    voice blows by
    low light
    car crash
    low light
    can't wear my mask
    your first, my last
    voice goes by
two birds is what they'll see
    getting lost upon their way
    wind rolls by
    low light
    eyesight
    low light
    i need the light
i'll find my way from wrong
what's real, our dream i see

i have no idea what it is really saying..but i remember when this album came out....i carved 2 birds into this wall at my college, so this song does touch me in a special way...i kinda think it has to do with love between to people, but then, also God. that is what it means to me...."ill find my way from wrong, our dream i see" kinda like finding the right path with your life partner, and also God....also about the "i will feel calm" like you have a peace about this person youre supposed to be with..its not infatuation, its calmer and more rational i guess..i dont really know.. i know that "our dream i see" is very beautiful line, and i like it very much. "what's real, our dream i see" probably soulmate type thing.....very beautiful song

also, "can i be here all alone?" kinda makes me think about God too. i could and probably am wrong, but this song sounds like loneliness and a search for God, as well as a companion....some of the other lyrics on the album are about God too..well that is how i interpret it

    Interpretations:

To me Low Light is about how every one of us need something familiar in our lives. Something we can always return to so we are reminded of where we started. Things change so quickly it's hard to keep up with people and situations from the past. Maybe the words "Low Light" are describing the dim lights of the stage. It's familiar to the band. It's what they need to remind them of their pasts, and how it all started out.

it seems to me that low light is about a guy who was in a car accident and is now badly disfigured. low light refers to his fear to go out into the day for fear of people being revolted by his appearance. he may have also been blinded in the crash. it didnt kill him but he feels that where he is at now is worse then death. the line 'i need the light' shows his longing to step out of hiding and to have a regular life again.

  • Thanks for your theorys. Im still a bit not sure though. You know what I keep picturing when I listen to it? Some old black and white film. Two young lovers killed (maybe a car crash) just wandering around lost in time and dimensions. Being seen by the living as two birds.
This is crazy I know but thats what I feel.
Maybe as a kid I watched too many 'Tales Of The Unexpected' or something?
And we're all allowed to dream of the next time we touch.
  • I feel like it has something to do with soulmates or lovers. Since I got to hear this song live the first time it was played and it was my first experience seeing Pearl Jam it is a very special song to me. I was there with my current fiance and its kinda our song.
The reason the main stream is thought of as a stream is because it's so shallow. -George Carlin-

I've always interpreted it as two lovers maybe splitting and you need to find that one place where everything makes you feel OK.
  • Whenever I hear this song, in my mind, I picture this person, driving at night... driving kinda slow, and the low lights alluded to are the lights coming from the cars passing him by... and this person drives with a heavy heart because this person is driving away from the person he/she loves...
