I love this song...

all the photographs are peeling
and colors turn to gray, he stayed
in his room with memories for days, he faced
an undertow of future's laid to waste, embraced
by the loss of one he could not replace

and there's no reason that she'd passed
and there is no god with a plan, it's sad
and his loneliness is proof, it's sad
he could only love you, it's sad

the door swings through a passing fable
a fate we may delay, we say
holding on, live within our embrace
he lit a match, he laid in bed
hoping their dreams will bring her back, it's sad
and his loneliness is cruel, it's sad
he could only love you, it's sad

holding his last breath, believing
he'll make his way
if she's not forgotten
he's haunted
he's searching for escape

if just one wish could bring her back, it's sent
and his loneliness is proof, it's sad
he will always love you, he said

here's the lyrics from the official pearl jam site...a little different than what paperclip has posted here...i haven't compared the two sets of lryics with the song yet:

    All the photographs were peeling
    And colors turned to gray
He stayed... in his room with memories for days
He faced... an undertow of futures laid to waste
Embraced... by the loss of what he could not replace

There is no reason that she passed
And there is no god with a plan
It's sad... and his loneliness is proof
It's sad... he could only love you
    It's sad

The door swings to a passing fable
    A fate we may delay
We say... holding on...delivered in our own brace
He let ‘em as he laid in bed
H oping that dreams would bring her back
It's sad... and his loneliness is proof
It's sad... he could only love you
    It's sad

    Holding his last breath
    Believing... he'll make his way
    But she's not forgotten
    He's haunted...he's searching for escape

If just one wish could bring her back
It's sad... and his loneliness is proof
It's sad... he will always love you
    It's sad

    ds
And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....
  • oops, sorry... my bad. didn´t pay attention.
but it does seem that at the very end of the song he says: "he said" instead of "it´s sad".

but i guess that´s just me, i´s difficult to hear what Ed´s singing sometimes.

I thought it was about someone losing his partner through death. Any other guesses?

I never saw it as death.
Just about someone loving someone who doesn't love them back.

It's almost worse, in a way.

  • i thoight it was about death aswell especially when ed sings "hoping his dreams would bring her back." a very depressing song but i love the intro so much

    Oh yeah, I agree.

I just like to twist the lyrics around in my head a little bit so it "fits" better...

This song reminds me of my grandparents who were together for 60 years before my nana passed, now my grandpa hangs around the house all alone slowly fading away into nothingness, he's "SAD." Being with someone that long and losing them, you might as well die yourself.

this is a great song....maybe two summers ago it was my theme song...i listened to it non stop for months...the feeling it has is unique..my favorit line, "It sad...and his loneliness is proof " what a crazy thing to say...its proof that its sad...i love it..i always took it as a romance love, not death...but with all PJ, take it for what you will..

But for me what is crazy about this song, is that the story is sad, touching, but the music is not...the music is up beat really...thats why i love the song..It moves...It doesnt stay in the sad moment, it moves through it...and I think that is a message in itself...

Exactly. It reminds me of an old couple in my family, uncle and aunt. He was 80 when his wife died suddenly. She was a wonderfull funny woman. He couldn't cope with it and died 3 or 4 months later.
