me and a friend have been arguing over the true meaning of this lyric from Leash. Can you guys help settle the score and give me your interpretations.

Thanks.

It means "get away from me." Who the lyric is speaking to is up to the listener.

If it's just those 6 words, then it means Leave me alone.

I just always see it as leave me the fuck alone and/or I can't stand the mere sight of you.

Troubled souls unite, we got ourselves tonight
I am fuel, you are friends, we got the means to make amends
I am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side
I am right by your side...

    Young lover I stand
It was their idea, I proved to be a man
    Take my fucking hand
It was their idea, I proved to be a man
Will myself to find a home, a home within myself
We will find a way, we will find our place

Drop the leash, drop the leash...
    Get outta' my fuckin' face
Drop the leash, drop the leash...
    Get outta' my fuckin' face
Drop the leash, drop the leash...
    Get outta' my fuckin' face
Drop the leash, drop the leash

Drop the leash, we are young
Drop the leash, we are young
    Get outta' my fuckin' face...
Drop the leash, drop the leash...
    Get outta' my, my...

Delight, delight, delight in our youth...
    Get outta' my fuckin' face...

After looking at the lyrics, particular the first couple stanzas it seems there is more to this lyric that I originally thought. I thought it was just leave me alone/i'm on my own blah blah blah, but the protagonist is fuel, and a young lover that proved to be a man. Fuel with friends, but not a guide? I think there are global experiences in these lines, but they are disconnected. Maybe the protagonist is saying let me find the connections between all of these things I'm suppose to be?

  • I always thought it was pretty straightforeward.....

It's pretty much angst incarnate, but there's some hope and a bit of backstory...

the first stanza is pretty much a show of hope to all "troubled souls" (think angry teenagers) and talks about finding hope by coming together and basically everything being sort-of alright so long as you've got some people.

However, implied in this is also the idea that all these troubled, angry, depressed people are out there but for whatever reason have things keeping them from really joining together, uniting and connecting meaningfully.

The second stanza is a bit of back story, and it should be noted that the lyrics in the CD case say "it was their idea/ told me to get her pregnant"
that's pretty striaghtforeward, if you ask me.

"Will myself to find a home, a home within myself
We will find a way, we will find our place"

I don't know if it's supposed to say "our place" or "a place" either way, it's just expressing a feeling like "there IS somewhere outthere you belong and we WILL find it, no matter how shitty stuff is right now"

Of course, this is combined with the idea drom the dirst line of that bit I quoted -- finding said place within yourself. It's sort of a Buddhism/Boethius thing; no matter how bad stuff may be outside, you control how you feel about it.

But there's also a bit of irony in the whole thing; it hints at the falseness of the hope running throughout the song. It sounds almost desperate, like "there HAS to be somewhere and something good in all this shitty world" but maybe the only place you can find that is inside yourself, which is a kind of hollow answer, when you are just a fucked up inside as everything else is outside.

................. in the end, this song is very "poetic" as according to some dude's definition. What I mean is, it expresses through words (and music, a big part) what can not be expressed with words. It captures an indescribable feeling.

The song is about Eddie and a girlfriend (whom he wont name)..its about her getting pregnant and having an abortion. In the liner notes of VS he even refers to the pregnancy, and he has talked about his situation during pro choice events before.

i always thought of it as simply :" let me be free you stupid bastards"
if the teen pregnancy story is true, then it could symbolize a young Vedders disgust with the girl or maybe those who pressured her. hey, he's only human.

Personally I think Ed was playing a little sub-dom with his woman and she beat on him a little too much and he took it to heart....Just my interpretation.....
