So, in Daughter, "The shades go down", and a couple songs later, in Rearviewmirror, "Finally the shades are raised". Coincidence? Thoughts?
AskPearlJam: PearlJama101-guest says: Who's idea was it for Eddie to play banjo on "Soon Forget"?
Eddie: I don't know whose idea it was but it was turned down.

If I were to change my screen name, "Thread Killer" would be near the top of the list.

  • no coincident in my eyes... for me i take it as "the shades go down" of the house go down so no one can see whats going on inside, with "finally the shades are raised" to me it means the secret is out, the shades of that house previous have been raised and what went on is out in the open.. but thats just my take on it.. i just truly don't believe that anything with pearl jam is co incidence

I've never thought about it. Really cool. Kinda like Breath-Yellowledbetter

    Breath:

Whoa. I suggest you step out on your porch.
Oh yeah. Huh. huh. Huh huh, yeah.
Run away my son. See it all. Oh see the world.

    Yellow Ledbetter:

Unsealed on a porch a letter sat.
Then you said, "I wanna leave it again."

Ah yeah, can you see them out on the porch? Yeah, but they don't wave.
But I see them round the front way. Yeah.
And I know, and I know. I don't wanna stay at all.

Two b-sides, cult favorites, and from the same era? No coincidence. I could also throw in another song from the same time "Porch" itself, but I don't think it has anything to do with the two songs above.
  • I think they talk about this in one of the two books that are out.
Obviously the stories in each song are about different characters, but I think they relate to eachother.

Well if they do relate shades being your eyelids. In daughter she can't see and in RVM you see it all.

When I look through a window the room is bigger. The shades drawn bring in light, bring in potential, the outside, an escape, but towards something. Shades down are similar to how we feel when we retreat; we almost drown in the lack of answers.

yes, they relate to each other. i loved that when i first heard vs.

i recall a later interview (perhaps, after vitalogy?) in which ed talks about sticking to a particular theme in the albums that pj make.

coincidence? probably not. in daughter she was caught within her circumstances. in RVM she has finally managed to break free of those circumstances.

Exactly, Rearviewmirror is like Part 2 to Daughter's Part 1. It's no coincidence.
