"Death ain't the same without you, dear"...
This song is so painfully beautiful. I printed out the lyrics tonight. Before reading them, the song seemed to me to be about a spirit reaching down to someone special left on Earth.
I'm not afraid of ghosts, are you? So far, only friendly ones have visited me.
What do you all think of this song?

  • oh yeah, the three best songs that I haden't heard before Lost Dogs were, Sad, Hold On, & Other Side (oh actually I did pick up the I am Mine single and hear Other Side before hand)

Yeah, Jeff gets an A+ for this masterpiece, I'm pretty sure it's about Jeff's parents.........Eddie said that if death is to embark upon another shore, then this song is what it's like to be on an island while your soul mate is out at sea......not and exact qoute,
I think this is all in the Lost Dogs book
Hell; a paticular realm of the after life where they never play Pearl Jam

You're right, it's in the Lost Dogs book.
Sometimes, though, I just like to listen first to hear what the song says to me.
Even if I can't understand all the words at first, the message gets through somehow! This is truly an amazing song...it's Eddie's voice that gets the meaning out, even though the lyrics are good.

    Other Side

it's not the same without you up here
    can't find my wheels
your absence is what breeds this fear
warm breath and all it steals
you can't know how it feels to be in here
all the dark horse fields, befriendin' me
playin' ain't the same without you here
we've come to hate the golden rule
cannot seem to make the dots connect
the morning light don't show you near
you can't know what it's like to bleed from here
the blackened world goes white, it goes nowhere
    oooh hoo..
death ain't the same without you dear
i make the others run and hide
new york streets seem to make it worse
all this noise inside the quiet
i can't hold on, the weight you bear
my body's broken fast, please lift me up
you can't know what it's like to be inside
your fading melodies can't beat my need
i'm not the same without you here
how can i quit to be there
    sit and stare
    stare..
    begging for a prayer

This is part of the reason why I originally thought that the song was written w/ Andy Wood in mind... however, I don't know what Andy's and Jeff's relationship was like, I can only speculate really.

The song is totally amazing... it was one song that really stood out... it kinda suffered from the Strangest Tribe syndrome... on a single release w/out much around it musically didn't let the song shine in a way it truly should... so even tho I had the I Am Mine single, it never really hit home till I heard it on Lost Dogs. It's amazing how those things work!

As for ghosts, yes, I believe in them and I'm not afraid of them.

    Jeff rocks!
So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone. And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow. But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself. It is best to compose a poem, an honest longing or simple song of hope.
    That is why I'm singing

Nice to read your takes on the song...
It has been haunting my mind for the last several days, but in a good way!
