Four years ago today, Backspacer, the giant sea turtle sponsored by Pearl Jam, won "The Great Turtle Race" by Conservation International.

All funds raised by Pearl Jam fans and donated to the organization were matched dollar for dollar by the band and other race sponsors.

According to CI, six of the seven sea turtle species are currently categorized as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered globally by the International Union of Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List. To learn how you can help protect these creatures today, click here.
