  • there´s no code
Don't let me know we're invisible
Don't let me know we're invisible
We could dance, dance, dance thru' the fire
Dance, dance, dance thru' the fire
  • Apparently there's no bar code on the album, which is meant to be an anti-consumerism statement. The other interpretation stems from the term "No Code," which in medical lingo means "Do not resuscitate." This may have been a response to the hype that accompanied their earlier albums, and the expectation that this "experimental" album would not fare as well commercially.

I have no insider knowledge, but those are the 2 replies I've noted when this question has been asked before.
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

-The only fucking reason you guys chant my name is cuz I'm the only guy in the band whose name has two syllables. We call Stone 'Stoney'. You could chant that, 'Stoney, Stoney' -EV

-Stone has the guts to fly here in a helicopter, but he's too scared to play breath -EV

What do you think is the meaning of No Code? I never even thought of it. No Code means access is available to everyone, yes?

No rules? no restrictions? no accepted code of behaviour / approach to adhere to? no barriers?

I always took it to mean no rules... no code to live by kind of :)

But, I'm thinking that like most of their album titles, there are a million ways you could go with it! Pretty amazing that they manage to come up with such interesting short album titles, that say so much and so little at the same time.
  • It just means to go with the flow, to live and let everything not-worth-living behind...to live freely & to enjoy every moment while you're here...
    En mi vida,
    el oscuro me mantiene
    cuando yo te vi
en la lluvia me prometiste tu sangre

    Estrella de la mañana
    Samael te persigo a ti
y si me quedo sin alas
    ademas me muero por ti
  • I had assumed at the time that it had something to do with "flatlining". Though I'm not sure what

To me, there's a bit of this "carpe diem" approach but I also think it means something like "this album doesn't follow a code of conduct" or something along those lines.

To me it means "Don't try to label this one 'cause you'd be wasting your time". That medical jargon interpretation was pretty smart, too.

  • I always interpreted "No Code" as meaning there was no set of rules or regulations for musicians, that they had the right artistically to do whatever they pleased. When ppl wanted Pearl Jam to release another "Jeremy" and ppl claimed they had to follow expectations, they said "fuck that" and released No Code, proving they could do ANYTHING!!!

  • Pearl Jam lives by one code as far as interpretation goes..

Whatever it means to you, that's what it means (the old Bob Dylan stance).

All of the ones you've listed are probably right to some extent.

Yes, i guess that works too, but I think Ive read somewhere long time ago that the band itself named it No Code cause its full of codes. Look at the artwork for example, and the cd inside, so named them completely opposite of what ectually is. Also, medical term for No Code is DNR i guess, and this album is def not and *easy* listen...Im saying that ppl who actually got into this album, real fans, live by No Code (roughly said), the rest are DNR :D
I dunno, just my opinion, as this album has been my fav since...always :)
