Evacuation!
This is one of those songs, along with Breakerfall and God's Dice, that didn't catch my attention when I first heard Binaural. I'm thinking its because the production on these songs is lacking (whereas later in the album it is excellent). After hearing the live boots I took more notice. First, Breakerfall became one of my fav pj songs (rocks my world, in fact) and then I begun to love God's Dice for its fast groove and truly excellent lyrics (nice work, Jeff!), but Evacuation was still hard to get into.
However, I have begun to appreciate Matt's songwriting more lately. You Are, Get Right, In the Moonlight, Unemployable... all among pj's best I think... and going back to Soundgarden, I can't get enough of one of the songs Matt co-wrote with Chris... Rhinosaur.
So yesterday I'm listening to the Tampa 2000 boot. On comes Evacuation. And for some reason its sounds better than ever. It rocked my train ride home. I don't care if anyone saw me bopping my head to it.
Yet, despite my new appreciate for this song, it still sounds terrible on Binaural. The guitar has too much treble. Ed's voice sounds weird. It sounds like a half-decent decent demo. The album production doesn't do it the justice it deserves.
Great great song, Matt and Ed! Hope they break it out later this tour.
And now... what do these lyrics mean to you?
Evacuation (Cameron/Vedder)
The sirens scream wanton attention
Time to take heed and change direction
Time to take stock and make omissions
Evacuation.... Evacuation...
Time to take leave of formal functions
Time to plant seeds of reconstruction
No time, this time, to feign reluctance
It's like you're waiting for a diamond shore to wash your way
Bets put aside, you're evil
Let's crawl into your face
A vision, vague or not, raising a frightful wake-you-up
Time for... Evacuation... Evacuation... Evacuation...
Evacuation...
Evacuation... Evacuation...
There was a solemn man who watched his twilight disappear
(In the sand)
Altered by a fallen eagle, a warning sign..
(Sign)
He sensed worry could be strength, with a plan he said
Time for...Evacuation... Evacuation... Evacuation...
Evacuation...
Evacuation... Evacuation... Evacuation... Evacuation...
Evacuation... Evacuation... Evacuation... Evacuation...

i'm sorry, i cannot even evaluate the lyrics b/c this is most definitely one of those songs i can't stand. i want to like it b/c it's pj, but i just can't. thankfully there aren't many pj tunes i feel this way about....but man, i just dispise this song. i will admit, amny of the tunes on binaural took a lot of time to like...but this is one that just never made it.
altho i will admit, reading the lyrics i enjoy it far more...but i still cringe for the chorus b/c i can *hear* it in my head. yikes.
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow
