If there is any song that I can relate too by PJ, it's this song.

My lips are shakin' my nails are bit off
Been a month since I've even heard myself talk
Only advantage this life's got on me
Picture empty cup in the middle of the sea

And I fought back in my mind
Never lets me be right, I got memories, I got shit
So don't you go and show it

Oh, I walked the line, when you held me in at night
Oh, I walked the line, when you held my hand at night

On empty shells seem so easy to crack
    Got all these questions
Don't know who I could even ask
So I'll just lie alone, and wait for the dream
Where I'm not ugly as you're lookin' at me

And I sent you to bed
Oh, in a little while I'll see now
If just once I found true love
Oh, I'd say it like I mean it

    But I walked the line
When you held me in at night
    Oh, I walked the line
When you held my hand at night
    Oh, I walked the line
When you held me close at night
    I paid the price
Never held you in real life

    My lips are shakin'.

    Fuckin' great song!!!
  • It's my favorite Pearl Jam song... I could never get enough of it
  • The first time i really heard this was on the chicago 1995 boot... best fucking version ever... i listened to it seven times in a row or something like that... neil's solos on the real version are incredible too...

  • by far...one of the GREATEST pearl jam songs ever. i agree with the parts highlighted by animal.....but the lyrics seem off to me. i seem to rmember a line.........if just once i could feel love.....stare back at me. ??? either way....unbelievable tune.

this song is amazing.... and even more amazing live!!!
  • whenever i try to describe how much i love this song, and how it makes me feel....i cant even get close. it's.....so powerful, so beautiful, so tragic, so...AMAZING. i truely cannot say all the things it makes me feel, because those feelings are not constricted to words, they go beyond that.

    and this bit dreamn?

so i'll just lie alone and wait for the dream
where i'm not ugly and your lookin' at me
    and i stare you back
oh blue eyes, i've seen it
if just once i could feel love
oh stare back at me, yeah..
  • definitely my favorite song.....ever

  • What a song, so simple yet so powerful, like so many others I relate to nearly every lyric in the song. I bought the Greatest Hits just coz this song was on it even though i have a few boots with it on it aswell as Tb2k.

I've always thought of the line as:

    'And i stare you back,
Oh blue eyes i've seen it..
If just once i could feel love,
    stare back at me..'

That line and the one before it are so powerful.

This really is a great PJ song. At first i prefered the TB2K version because i was a bit faster and flowed more, but now i think i prefer the studio version, i think it really matches the mood of the lyrics and gives it a spookier feel.

When i hear the lyrics to the second verse/second prechorus, i get such a strong image in my head, these really are some of Ed's best lyrics-not just for the poetic beauty of the words etc, but for the emotion behind them etc.
Situations get fucked up and turned around sooner or later...

I can't even come close to describing it either....I was actually going to try just now but....there aren't any words....loved this song from the very first note.

This song clearly owns. Its in a class all by itself. Neil's guitar pretty much always rocks, but's its especially poignant on this song, and I don't throw the word 'poignant' around for nothin. Ed's vocals produce an amazing carthasis. Definately one of PJ's best.
  • I know that the pearl jam fans i've met, they don't classify this in there top ten, but i classify this in my top 3.. I have loved this song since the first day i heard it.. And i completely agree with the red bits that animal highlighted, those are what i say "MY" part of the song is..

I relate to this song so much, and It is a powerful song
She said to me, over the phone...She wanted to see other people... I thought:
"Well then, look around, they're everywhere"
Said that she was confused... I thought:
