If average joe: Let's assume 11 holidays Let's assume that they should get some "vacation" (average American gets 10 days)
Thats 240 potential working days. Using your 150 #...thats 62.5%. Leaving 37.5% of the time to work from the area of their constituents and campaign. What do you think is the right amount of time?
Not sure the right amount of time but when I heard the number I was surprised last yr they were in session less than 120 ...just think for the salary they earn they would work more ...

Yeah I understand. I do know they need some work time back in the area that sent them to washington. I honestly don't know what the right # is and feel too much of that 37.5% is spent campaigning rather than working.

Found this article that indicates congressional working hours are decreaasing:
The absolute only think politicians are good for are, setting their own pay, pension, health benefits and generally making sure that have the best working conditions...as for everyone else...

They've got those nailed down, that's for sure. The way I see it, congressional behavior is pushing a lot of people toward dislike and distrust of government. They play by a whole set of different rules (i.e. the things you listed) and yet expect us to honor them as representing us, their constituents. It's a sad state of affairs and getting worse.

I’ve long given up thinking any politician cares about me...
all they care about is my tax dollar ... politicians are scum.

It's not all they do in their jobs.

These slobs are only in session 140 to 150 days out of a whole yr it’s absurd , they need to change this ...
so they work almost as many days as teachers.
No, that’s not correct. The days in session are not the only work days. You guys all love to bash politicians but I’ve known a few provincial politicians in Canada and they work incredibly long hours. When they are in their constituency they tend to go to endless community events, nights and weekends, as well as being in their offices during week days.
Now, you might disagree with what they do, but they do put in hours far beyond those in session.
my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf

I agree with you... Although pjhawks' post I think was more intended to trash teachers, lol. Because teachers suck and are lazy, didn't you know?

isn't it great that pointing out facts about the number of days teachers work and number of days they have off somehow is equated with calling them lazy and saying they suck. it's not like the same thing didn't happen in a previous thread so i shouldn't be surprised it happened again.

Teachers are all underworked, overpaid, government tools to brainwash your children

You know, I'm amazed at how the teachers union has brainwashed everyone. Teachers have a tremendous time off each year. And they actually make a pretty decent living in most places. The fact they have to lesson plan in the evening some times is no different then most people that take work home. The only thing that drives me nuts in regards to teachers is the fact that they have to pay for many supplies on their own (or in the more affluent neighborhoods the parents send it all in). That is crap, we should fund the school to provide a certain level of spending for the teachers on this sort of stuff and then they budget. It's stupid and annoying.
But back on congress....I still really don't know what the right % in washington and the right % back "home" is....but I feel we'd get a far better product both places if we had term limits and eliminated all the campaigning all the time.

We’d get a better product if we took money out of campaigning. We have term limits, they’re called elections.

Elections lead to more time campaigning....but I agree about the $ part.

Not in most countries. Only US do politicians perpetually campaign
