My father is a writer. He's has been to 82 countries and he's is hoping to make it to 100 countries so he can become a member of the century club.
He started off as a travel writer, but now he writes about other things. He is an old school guy.
Born in '45. His mother was in the first platoon of female Marines. She was a tough ass lady. He was a Marine back in the 60's. Never went to Nam because he joimed the reserves after bootcamp and his unit wasn't called.
We watched Full Metal Jacket together once and I asked him if that was an acurate portrait of a drill sergent.
His exact words were, "They were scarier in real life because they would choke you, punch you, and throw you down."
Basically, he explained that drill sergeants back then taught you how to kill people without thinking, and as a 23 year old kid... you thought they were gonna kill you. And you knew they could if they wanted to.
He and I don't agree on politics, which he sometimes writes about. I don't like his political articles.
One thing he does do are ALS updates. I thought it might be interesting to post them here... so you all could get to know my father from a personal standpoint and understand what its like to have ALS from a first person account.
I'll go back in the archives and start from the beginning of his diagnosis and his articles. He's had ALS almost two years. So, this will be a good way to bump this post while providing some insight and content.
I would love to hear your insights and comments about whether or not these articles are interesting or informative.
Very interesting and informative. Thanks for introducing us to your father, his life, his battle, and his passions. He has had quite a life, and hopefully has many more adventures ahead of him! I'm sure he is proud of you.

As I mentioned a few days ago, my father is a writer. He decided shortly after his diagnosis, he would begin documenting his journey with this disease. This is the first article he wrote about his condition. It is from December 3rd, 2016.
My father's ALS updates are posted weekly on Sundays. In an effort to let you all get to know my father and to understand what it's like to live with ALS from a first hand account, I will be posting the archives of his articles. You can click on the headline below to read the article. Thank you for your support

As I have said and will continue to say, THANK YOU for all the support and bumps and kindness. Linked below is the third installment of my father's ongoing ALS UPDATE articles that he posts each and every Sunday. This one is from Christmas 2016.
According to the ALS Association, approximately 6,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year, which averages to about 15 new cases each day. If any of you know of someone who has been diagnosed with ALS recently, I am MORE than happy to help in any way I possibly can. The initial diagnosis is very hard to deal with, but the community of support that surrounds you is incredible.
My father writes a weekly article about his journey with ALS. This is one of his first entries from his archives.
I mentioned that one of the reasons I want to hear Smile is because it's just one of those rare songs in the Pearl Jam catalogue that feature's harmonica. Many, many, many moons ago... when I was young and foolish and thought the world revolved around me, I taught myself how to play harmonica so I could jump on stage and make an ass of myself.
Luckily, I had some very, very, very good friends who let me fall on my face until I could actually play. This isa live recording of The Fullgrown Band from the Sylvia Theatre in York, SC. June 4th, 2004. Angie Rikard, Matt Hatfield and Drew Taylor
You know... after the Chicago show .. if they play Smile, this thread will have contributed (possibly) to that song being played.
If they don't play it, that's perfectly fine and understandable. Honestly, what are the chances?
I think the thing i will miss the most is the support you have shown for me and my dad from those of you who continue to bump this and wish my dad luck.
So thanks, in advance whether played or not, I got to chat with some really awesome people by private message and i got to send them my Dad's baseball card.
And they should definitely be invited on stage to recreate that vid when they play it at Wrigley!
Hahaha...
The Boss would totally freeze and Livi-Boogie wouldn't make it out there!!!!
I should make the video of William explaining that Arms Aloft is a Joe Strummer song and he was the lead singer for The Clash... Arms Aloft is his favorite song, but I told him, it wasn't REALLY a Pearl Jam song.
He was okay with it.
Mike McCready is his favorite. We "Play" Pearl Jam after dinner. I'm usually Stone or Eddie. My wife is always Matt and Livi is Jeff. When my dad is here, William makes my dad be Boom.
